I so want to argue with you, but you know, in looking online, with only a very few exceptions, all I can find are the Fredricks of Hollywood variety lingerie--which is definitely not what I am looking for. So, I am beginning to see your point of view.
I am not looking for a 1930's Ginger Rodgers dressing gown. Just something satin and maybe a little lace. Its possible my daughter won't appreciate it either, but I'm still going to look for something elegant AND sexy.

lauraalias - I appreciate your suggestion, but I want it to be a surprise. She knows she will have a bridal shower, but she's not planning it.

Avalon - I'm curious- Do you think women shouldn't wear white wedding gowns either?

I guess different areas have varied customs. Here in the NY area, friends and families throw lingerie showers all the time-- usually in addition to the main bridal shower or sometimes, when the bride is moving away-- its the only shower the bride has.

But, this is a travel forum, so I think I have talked this to death.

My Mom (from NY) had this fabulous collection of nightgown sets (I won't try to use the right word. It was the 60's, they were elegant and I guess to my Dad sexy. They were not racey or frivolous. I can recall a YSL number that was a white nightgown with a brown band for trim. It went to the floor and had an "overcoat" of the same silky material that went o the floor as well.... the neckline was tasteful....where have those days gone? Look in the larger stores (maybe even the budget conscious C&A). Find her something lovely and keep the tradition alive!!! What's her china pattern???? Maybe something that compliments it ....breakfast anyone...

Since you asked, her china pattern is Lenox Opal Innocence.

I have one more postscript to this discussion for those who thought buying a peignoir set for their daughter was creepy.
I re-married 13 years ago. My three daughters( 17, 20 and 24) were my attendants; they threw me a shower (which I thought very sweet) AND bought me a short satin with lace trim peignoir set ( very tasteful) from Victoria Secrets.

lady, it seems to be a tradition in your family and I think you should get her something lovely. Galeries Lafayette, as Sally suggested would be a good place to start. I have seen elegant items and racy items there in different price points.

A few weeks ago I read an article (sorry, can't remember the source - maybe NYTimes) about Parisians and lingerie. Here are some facts:

Parisians spend over 20% of their clothes budgets on lingerie. Lingerie is big business in France. Made me wonder what Americans spend - 2%?

Galleries Lafayette has 28,000 square feet of floor space devoted to Lingerie. That's alot of lingerie!

Personally, I second the recommendation and I'd go to Galeries Lafayette and browse around. They have something for everyone at all price points.

I've seen exactly what you're looking for in a couple of the more upscale department stores in NYC. I just never knew who wore them.

You see them most often aroud Valentine's Day (I guess for men to buy for their wife/girlfriend) but agree that 150 is probably not going to do it - at least for the ones that I've seen.

When my daughter got married a few years ago, I bought her a peignoir - it wasn't ultra-sexy, but it was a lovely (and more expensive than she could afford at the time) flowing gown and robe set.

She seemed happy with it.

The Parisescapes link mentioned that Monoprix is good place to get inexpensive lingerie. I seems like you can get ANYTHING there. I think I'll have to stop into one to get some souvineers next month.

I just recently bought a little nightgown in Monoprix but didn't see anything that would qualify as wedding night material. Most of them looked like work camp attire. Guess that is the style. Mine is taupe and a cotton knit with spaghetti straps and a dropped waist with a little tie around the hips and cost 29 euros.

28,000 square feet = a lot of lingerie! I'm sure I will find something there. We are going to the fashion show on Friday afternoon and will be sure to stroll through the area.
I ran out today browse at a local store called Bare Necessities ( I'm not sure of it is affiliated with the online entity). I am very happy to report that they had a nice number of peignoir sets. One lovely one was a Jones New York. The gown and robe matched but were sold separtely. Total was about $100. So, while it will be nice to have a "Paris peignoir" if the price is too costly, I have a back-up.

BTW, I think the "peignoir set" got its name because in the 1800's ladies would sit at their dressing tables brushing their hair ( you know the 100 strokes) before retiring. Thus the name. Think Scarlet O'Hara. This may or may not be true, but its a nice analogy.
