France - Castle Building 101? - Chateau de Guedelon

Hi, I have been reading about this castle in the making. A castle being built using only tools, techniques and materials available in the 13th century. Has anyone visited this site? We are wondering if it is worth rerouting our trip to visit it and surrounding area (Vezelay and the Basilica of Ste.Madeleine). Help!

Vezelay and that part of northern Burgundy is definitely worth a visit. Can't say about Guédelon, which we plan to visit this summer.

Well that depends on your interest in castles, how much time you have, what other things you might want to see and how many times you have been to France.

We spent 2 days exploring Vezelay, Dijon and that area - styaing in an adorable converted old mill - Moulin des Ruats. But we've benn to France quite a few times and have already visited a lot of of other areas at lest once - and Paris many times.

If you give us more info - as well as who "we" are - does it include kids, and what ages - you will get better answers.

I will try and be more clear. 'We' are a family of 4 - 2 adults and 2 kids (15/13). It is our first trip to France (first international trip for the kids). We are hoping to travel in France for 2 1/2 weeks before heading to Glasgow to meet up with family for about 5 days. We are just beginning our travel plans. We are trying to be conscious of not trying to do too much, and really enjoy what we do see, and hope that one day we will come back! We also waht to give the kids the experience of B&B's, youth hostels and local hotels. What we have right now is: Paris for about 5 days - then taking the train to Rouen and renting a car from there to spend about 3 days in Normandy. After that we are overwhelmed. We have a daughter who would like to go to Spain and a son who we don't want to totally overwhelm with museums! For him we were thinking the Castle de Guedelon (Vezelay)

Continuing my post (Vezelay)(computer died temporarily!!) Anyway... as you can see - we would end up in spain and then need to be in the Burgundy region. We have not made a decision of where to fly out to get to Glasgow - that is still open. Any comments are very much appreciated!

Burgundy is quite a bit out of the way if you are going to Spain from Normandy. If driving, one of the medieval castles in the Dordogne (Beynac or Castelnaud) or Carcassonne itself might be a better option.
