Four days in Italy or Austria

Hello, We are beginning to plan our October 2018 trip to Europe. So far we have planned excluding all the travel days:

Arrive Rome - one week Almafi Coast
Travel to Nuremburg - stop somewhere enroute in Italy or Austria for three days.
One week Germany
Four days Prague
Fly home

We need help deciding on the three days on the way to Germany. If it helps we have spent a lot of time in Florence, Venice, Rome, Pisa, Cinque Terre, Milan, Vienna, Lakes area of Austria, Salzburg.

We will be traveling on public transport.
We enjoy good food, walking around on foot but not hiking, enjoying people watching - not really into shopping.

Thank you.

Hi jinx,

Looking at a map....I think I'd stop someplace like Garmidch-Oartenkirchen or maybe Salzburg.

Have fun as you plan!

Hello Swandav, So happy to see your reply. Not sure if you recall you helped us plan our whole trip last year to Switzerland, Austria and the Rhine. Your guidance was spot on and we had a wonderful time. I am the poster from New Zealand who was in hospital - you were so patient with my endless questions.

Do you have a suggestion where we should stay in Garmish-Partenkirchen? Having been to Salzburg I think we need to explore another part of your side of the world.

Hi again!

Well, I'm happy that my input was helpful!

I don't recall if I told you, but I live in Garmisch, so I'm happy you're thinking of spending a few days there (I'm in Paris at the moment ... ooohlala).

I'm sorry, but I don't recall your preferred budget or criteria for hotels. But I normally recommend two -- the 4-star Hotel Zugspitze (on a quiet street between the train station and the pedestrian zone) and the 3-star Hotel Bavaria (in a quiet area near the pedestrian zone). Both of these are in Garmisch, which is what I usualy recommend; Garmisch has more cafes, restaurants, and shops than Partenkirchen does.

You may also want to consider staying in a vacation apartment, or Ferienwohnung. Take a look at the central booking site for the town at

www.gapa.de

and see if any look attractive to you. I can help you with location & bus stops, etc.

Have fun!

What about Bolzano/Bozen: 4 1/2 hrs by train from Rome and 5 1/2 hrs by train from Nuremberg

We will be traveling on public transport. Good resource sites for trains - www.seat61.com; www.budgeteuropetravel.com and www.ricksteves.com. Book long-distance tickets way in advance for nifty discounts.

There is also an overnight train Rome/Florence/Venice to Munich and Vienna

Have you considered Switzerland for a brief look en route to Germany? The Interlaken area is the epitome of awesome Alps and just off the main rail route Milan-Germany.

Hello PalenQ Thank you for the suggestion. We are fortunate that we have been to Switzerland many times and you are right the Interlaken area is wonderful. We spent a month in Switzerland last year so we really want to stop off in Austria or Italy this time round.

The man in seat 61 is a great site for advice on trains - my favourite way to travel.

I prefer Bozen to Innsbruck (direct fast trains from Rome, usually better weather in October).
But there is nothing wrong with Innsbruck.
