Few days ago somebody posted a link to Discovery Channel website, specifically, to an idea for the future of building a transatlantic tunnel. It started an interesting discussion, with some believers, some non-believers, and of course some comedians. Well, we will get to see if this is at all possible in the future, as Discovery Channel will air a program about this on Wednesday(4/16) at 9pm ET. If nothing else it should make it for an interesting hour of TV.

When I read that post yesterday I thought it was a joke, then last night I saw the ad for the Discovery Channel program. Should be interesting -- maybe not for the airlines industry, though.

Just a thought.... regardless of what type of train might run in such a tunnel.... how much did it cost to build the &quot;Chunnel&quot; between Britain and France? How long did it take to complete? How pricey is the trip compared to airfare? <BR><BR>Answer these simple questions and then do the math for a tunnel of Trans-Atlantic length. Oh well.... it was good for a laugh!

Much of the funding for the chunnel came from private investment...later many complaints from investors that they were led up the garden path by the gov.Dont know the amount.<BR>Slightly off topic : does anyone know what happened to the tunnel between Spain (Bolonia?) &amp; Morrocco? Last I heard they were trying for a grant from the EC. Distance is shorter than the chunnel.

Hey folks, relax!!! Nobody is saying that this is just around the corner, so let's not start calling the bankers looking for financing. This is at best a far away dream, but so was moon travel at one time. You can't compare todays cost to what something like this would cost in the future. It may be a lot more, or it could cost less. We do come up with different technologies everyday. The space shuttle was probably cost prohibitive when the Gemini or even Appolo program were going full speed, but they were both first steps to it. Space shuttle was the first step to Space station. So please don't start doing the cost comparisons. We all know that we will not see this in our lifetime, but one has to start sometime in order to maybe one day..............<BR>I'm sure it will still be an interesting program to watch.

My all-time favorites, &quot;Bob and Ray&quot; used to do a skit where a tunnel was being built out in to the Atlantic. Every few seconds, behind the mock serious narrator, you would hear a car careening, a person yelling then a splash.<BR>
