folegandros or amorgos

Looking for a third island in addition to Naxos and Korfornisi - any input on the two above?? Also recommended hotels are welcome as well. Happy travels!

Stili,

Don't know when you are going but I've just come back from a 10 day trip to Amorgos and Santorini.

Amorgos is a magical, unspoilt island with wild rocky mountaneous landcape, particularly along the Hora coastline. Superb beaches at Agia Anna and Mourou (excellent taverna, too) with few tourists, mostly Greek. Water is something to die for and the Hozoviotiza Monastery built high on a cliff should be a must on your trip. Views were even better than those we saw later in Santorini, which we picked up mostly for the caldera view.

Not too many ferries go to Amorgos but there is daily connection from Naxos to Katapola port. Lack of mass tourism helps the island maintain its Greekness almost intact - its inhabitants still ride their donkeys on the streets of Katapola or Aegiali.

Go to Panorama in the Tholaria village for an authentic Greek taverna where an old man tells stories and plays bouzuki every night. It didn't matter too much that we didn't understand a word. Nor other people there did but that didn't stop us dance for as long as we could.

We stayed at one of the Lakki Village villas with a seawiew - fully recommended. Best place to stay on the island is Aegiali - quieter than the main and more touristic port of Katapola.

I am only sorry we didn't take the boat trip to the uninhabited Nikouria island nearby Amorgos (20' from Katapola) for a swim. Maybe next time..

If you went to Folegandros, I would love to hear more about it as I was thinking of it as my next destination.

If you're still reading this...

I've visited Folegandros twice and love its simple, rocky remoteness.
I was lucky enough to stay in and review the island's best hotel, the anemomilos, which I'd recommend wholeheartedly but is often full - see
http://www.i-escape.com/anemomilosapartments.php

It's much smaller than Amorgos, less to do, but still plenty of secluded little beaches and nice places to eat out in the evening.
