It sounds as if you are not stopping. Is that correct? Florence isn't easy at all to bring a car into. Will your kids have luggage? How about Piazzale Michelangelo? You won't be that far from the highway, and there are always plenty of signs to this popular destination. I don't think meeting within the city is as practical as meeting on its outskirts.
Or how about meeting for lunch? Piazza Torquato Tasso is a good spot with parking, and you could have lunch at Vecchia Bettola if they are open.
Time of day and issues like stopping (or not) and luggage will make a difference.

Hi g,
>We are driving from Lucca to pick them up in Florence and then the 4 of us will drive to Venice. <
This sounds as if meeting at the Venice San Lucia station would be more convenient.
However,
You could meet at Piazzale Michelangelo, as T suggested, or your kids could take the no. 7 bus to Fiesole and you could meet them in the town square.
