Florence Experts: Beacci Tornabuoni vs. Hotel la Scaletta

We're planning a last-minute visit to see our son who will be studying in Florence and living on Via Maffia in the Oltarno. Most hotels are sold out for our dates - We're considering a deluxe room at the 4-star Beacci Tornabuoni or a suite at the 3-star La Scaletta. (Both seem to be a 5-10 minute walk from our son's apartment.) Roof deck is a must for us. Otherwise, we love charming boutique hotels in cool, non-touristy neighborhoods. Would appreciate a comparison from somebody who knows both locations and/or properties. We both go to Italy often, but I haven't been to Florence for years. Mr. Crosscheck was there recently, but can't remember where he stayed (!)

Have stayed at the Beacci Tornabuoni twice but not for several years - we haven't stayed at the Scaletta. The roof terrace at the BT is lovely. The hotel is (or was 10 years ago)old elegance. We love the hotel and can recommend it as it was the times we stayed there.

Still waiting to see if anyone has stayed at the Scaletta. Turns out that the BT does not have wifi in the rooms, which, sadly, might be a deal breaker for us.

We stayed at La Scaletta about 10 years ago. No complaints. It is certainly not your standard hotel, is full of quirks. Roof garden is lovely with great views. We were there pre-wifi so I don't know about that. The people in charge were very helpful.

Thanks so much. It turns out that BT does have wifi, so now we're back to square one. Has anyone been to either recently? Or does anyone have opinions of the Tornabuoni area compared to the Ponte Vecchio area on the other side of the river. Will both places be overrun with tourists in mid-September?

In answer to your last question, yes, Florence will be overrun with tourists and American students in September whatever hotel you stay in.

I've stayed at the BT and liked it very much but that area is the heart of the city's upscale shopping district and will be clogged with tourists. But then, the entire center city will be thus clogged, so I would not rule it out on that account. It is a lovely hotel. Close to sights; walk across the S. Trinita bridge to the Oltrarno to dine at night.
