Flam - Rail or Boat to Bergen

I am planning an extension of a trip to Europe to include Norway. Planning on the train from Stockholm to Oslo and then to Bergen but would like to detour to Flam.

It seems there are options how to get to Bergen. We could retrace out of Flum back to the mainline, and catch the train on to Bergen, or we could take a boat from Flam to Bergen.

As this would miss the rail journey into Bergen would this be a poor choice?

The boat trip is lovely. We did it in the winter and the captain decided not to put the heat on, which made it uncomfortable...but the scenery was fabulous. When we got to the end of the boat trip, we caught a local train to Bergan. So that's the down side, you won't have your fast train, but by then you are almost there, if I recall.

You can buy a ticket for the Norway in a Nutshell trip from oslo to Bergen at the train station in Oslo.

We have been able to do this tour from both Bergen and Oslo and would go again anytime.

You don't say what time of year you are going, but if there will be daylight take the boat from Flåm on Norway in a Nutshell, it beats the Myrdal-Bergen rail leg by a long way.

It would be the beginning of July, around the 1st or 2nd.

We have done it both ways and, as far as we were concerned, the boat trip won hands down.
