Fish'n'chips near Victoria...
A few months back someone asked the age-old question about good fish'n'chips in London. There were several strong responses highly favoiring a shop near the Victoria Coach Station. Someone even posted directions to the place. I copied and printed the info and now have lost it. I'll be in London in March and would like to see if anyone out there in FodorLand has this info...

My brother (who is grossed out by fish to begin with) told me that the fish of fish'n'chips fame is fried with its skin on. Is he right? He lives in London, but is very food picky. He survives on Cadbury. I am visiting in March and would love to try some new things, but not fish skin. Maybe I am too picky as well.

Buzz, Ben Haines has just returned to London and has promised to e-mail me directions and name of said shop as soon as he is able. I will then post on the forum.
I actually went to this place last March at the recommendation of Mr. Haines and absolutely LOVED it. It was very good. Plus, they serve you so much that you can't possibly eat it all. I had to throw about 2/3 of mine away. But it was sooooo good. For Fish & Chips and a drink (Fanta, I think) it was around $3. Only problem was that they didn't put enough vinegar on them for me (probably thought I wouldn't care for it as I'm an American). ')

Hi Buzz,
I'm sorry I don't know the F & C place by Victoria but the best fish & chips place is The Sea Shell Restaurant on Lisson Grove A 2 BLOCK walk from Marylebone Station. It is fabulous. They have a sit down restaurant but their take away counter is always mobbed. You can tell it is great because of the queue of London cabbies outside and in. Cabbies always know the best places to eat. They have all diferent types of fish such as plaice, haddock, cod, etc. etc. Their chips are great and so is their coleslaw. I always make a special trip to the Sea Shell. It's worth it.
Have a great trip.
Cheers,
Pat

The fish and chips take away is two doors down from Victoria Coach Station. If you face the station, it is on the right hand side as you would head to Ebury Street. Sorry, don't know the name of it, but it is also across the street from a cafe/tea shop that does a brisk business. I think the fish and chips shop is open til 10pm.

Buzz , the fish & chip shop in question is indeed on Ebury St .The shop changes name every couple of years but the owner remains the same .The last name it was called was " Chicken Station " & is right next to the main coach exit of Victoria coach station.I worked in the station for 7 years so i know this place very well.I would recommend that u try chips in a tray with curry sauce & also sample the giant gherkins & pickled onions.
The cafe opposite is / was called alpinos & is a very good /typical london cafe.If you go there be prepared for noise , steam , smoke & friendly banter from coach drivers & travellers alike.Try the "breakfast bap" & a milky coffee.

god i miss home
Buzz,

Here are the directions to that F&C shop near Victoria Coach Station;directions are Ben Haines' from that earlier thread (titled "Help - Directions for Victoria Coach"):

"In Victoria Station find the platform with the highest number: it's near the Grosvenor Hotel. Walk out through a small passage to Buckingham Palace Road, turn left, walk past Victoria Place shopping Centre, past the corner for Eccleston Bridge, and at Elizabeth Bridge corner look right. There's the coach station, a monument of Art Deco. (Also, just beyond it, a good fish and chip shop, with a real deep fat frier, not the stuff they call "traditional" in West End pubs.)

Or, arrive at Victoria underground station. Ask the officers for the small stairs up to the bus stand (not the bus station). At that stand find the bus stop for busses 11 and 211. Pay the driver 70 pence, ask him to call out for Victoria Coach Sation, and go two stops."

Hope that helps!~MaryC : )
