I know this is an older thread, but having just returned from the UK, I had a question. We had fish and chips at several locations. We noticed that under the batter, the skin was still on. Is this the norm? It seems that in my limited experience fried fish in the US is served w/out skin.

Yep, skin still on is the norm.<BR><BR>One of the correct ways to eat your fish is to be sure it's skin side down, then just eat the actual fish & top layer of batter.<BR><BR>Don't even think about the caloric punch this meal packs!!!

My wife and I are heading to London on Saturday and love fish & Chips. But for this trip my wife has to miss out because she is pregnant and the Doctor told her that fish in Europe has very high levels of mercury and she needs to stay away. Any idea why?

Blimey Steve that's a new one on me. I've heard about the unpasteurised cheese thing, but haven't noticed any of my pregnant friends giving up their cod & chips!<BR><BR>Can you really imagine all European women giving up fish for 9 months??

I am not suprised to hear they keep the skin on - because they only know how to fry fish and chips in Lancashire - but no one seems to go there.
