I liked the Hotel Julia. It was near Trevi fountain, Piazza Novano and Pantheon. I walked everywhere except to St. Peter's.

Hit send too soon....
I thoroughly enjoyed my stay with my daughter at Nicolas Inn. It's near the Colosseum, but I personally found that area to be fascinating. July will be very hot and crowded, so take that into consideration.
I'm not sure what type of lodging you are looking for; this place only has 4 rooms and the couple that owns it are young and very helpful. Melissa is American and she has lots of good pointers. Breakfast is included in the rate, but is basically a voucher for a little cafe half a block down where you can order whatever you want...whenever you decide to roll out of bed. (but you will have too much to do to sleep too late!) We were there during Easter week this year and paid 150 Euros for both of us. We had two twin beds pushed together and the room was plenty spacicous. Be sure you find some place with good A/C.

Hmmm...weekend stay in Rome during high season-I do hope that you have sent out a few reservation applications by now as you will probably have a difficult time securing a reservation for that period. The one good thing-July is not as hot as August!
