The first time I stayed in Paris I booked a room at the Hotel du Louvre. It is across the street from The Louvre and is walking distance to all the important sites. There is a Brasserie in the hotel and numerous restaurants nearby. The hotel is part of the Concorde chain. I have been to Paris a number of times and I always stay here.

Like Jules a few messages above I prefer to stay in the 7th. You are near the Eiffel Tower but in an area that feels residential and can enjoy a little of what living in Paris might we like. We frequent the local shops and restaurants. My favorite hotels are the Londres Eiffel and the Relais Bosquet. Skip the restaurant Chez Agnes next to the Londres Eiffel however.

My husband and I took our first trip to Paris last fall with friends who had been there several times. We stayed at the K + K Hotel Cayre in St Germain. It is a very modern, hip boutique hotel, with small rooms. We easily walked around the Latin Quarter and to the Musee d'Orsay, Notre Dame, the Opera House, etc. It was a fairly long (but doable) walk to the Eiffel Tower and we needed the Metro to get to the Sacre Couer. The cost of the room includes an excellent continental breakfast.

The metro will get you where you want to go, but there are reasonably priced hotels in the 5th, 6th, and 7th. We have only stayed in the 6th, near Saint Germain de Pres, and we like that area very much. The last hotel we stayed in was the Hotel le Clement, located at 6, rue Clement, right near Gerard Mulot Rooms are small, but pleasant, and it's right by the Mabillon Metro. We especially liked Miriam, who speaks perfect English, having spent several years in the U.S.

Have a wonderful trip!
