I wouldn't say southern California for Italy. I'd say more like the Bay Area, which should provide enough weather variability to keep you guessing! Check www.weatherbase.com to get historical averages, highs, and lows for your dates and cities.

Since this is the spring what you will need is spring wear. It's not winter - but still can get chily at night - if all you have is capris, t-shirts and sandals you will freeze your little heine off.
Really - is this so compicated? A light jacket, a cotton sweater or two, good walking shoes, mid weight slacks and a mix of long and short sleeve tops.

It is always good to check the monthly average and 10-day weather forecasts before you leave. Do as NYTraveler says and take clothes that can be layered and can accommodate warm and chilly, wet and dry weather. A waterproof jacket and umbrella never hurts.

I agree with Ira that layers are the best option, for anytime in Italy in my experience.
I live in FL which is laid out very much like Italy. The weather in Miami is way different on any given day (except in July and August when it is sweltering everywhere in the state) than my home here in Jacksonville.
Layers solve the problem. I also pack an umbrella and a lightweight windbreaker type of jacket.

It'll be much warmer than London, you don't wear winter clothes in May. You wear clothes from spring/summer collections, these include pieces for the hottest days as well as cooler ones.
I'm assuming you have the savoir faire to select pieces from these collections without any further assistance.
