I didn't expect this post to be very enlightening (sorry.). Boy was I wrong. Some of your favorites are cities I wouldn't have considered (or would have been low on my list of travel priorities) , but your collective travel experience and opinions have made me reevaluate future travel plans and re-prioritize. Thanks for you input.

1) PARIS
2) FLORENCE

Paris, because I traveled there alone but was NEVER lonely.

Florence because, despite the fact that it was December and rainy and chilly, I have never met people who were so warm and friendly. Plus, it was the last trip that me and my favorite travel partner and best friend -- my beautiful mother -- took together before she died, suddenly, in April.

#1 Paris -- history, romance, architecture, food, bridges, art, beauty
#2 Venice -- for the sound of the water lapping and the meandering streets that invite you to get lost in them
#3 Rome -- because it looks out at the world and asks why should I be ancient or modern when it's so much more fun and interesting to be both
#4 Florence -- for the art the art the art, and the light that makes it look like it's the "magic hour" no matter what time it is
#5 Amsterdam -- because of its quirkiness and openness and embrace of a diverse humanity, not to mention the Van Gogh museum and the Anne Frank house, and the tall narrow houses all lined up in solemn winking rows looking at their reflections in the canals

Florence, for its food, its museums, its energy, its shopping, the way it looks from the top of the Duomo and for its people

It's got to be DUBROVNIK. The most beautiful city. It is a incredible combination of natural beauty and beauty made by human hand. So pure, clean, sunny, green, blue, azure, stony, rich, cultural, historical, friendly, innocent emotions I didn't get in any other place.

I was browsing through and read your header and immediately said "Copenhagen". I am a Canadian living in Poland now and we travel in Europe quite a bit but keep going back to Copenhagen (4 times). The people, the food, the shopping, Tivoli and of course, the beer. Also, it reminds me of a part of my hometown city.

I loved reading these replies! Last year I fell in love with KRACOW - if you've never been, go, you won't regret it!

Oh, I've only been to Spain, but of the many cities I visited there in my three-week trip, I have to mention Sevilla. It really is the most "Spanish" of Spanish cities --- and the whole region of Andalucia is what I think most Americans think of when they think of Spain. Sevilla --- those narrow, winding streets, a beautiful plaza every block or so (Plaza Espana, decorated with dark blue tiles, is a must!), the river Guadalquivir. It's a must if you're headed for Spain!

Hands down, the best European city is Amsterdam: One week there and I returned to the US as an adult. Every kid should go for a week, unless he wants to run for president in his later years.
OK, big cities would have to be Paris, (London and Rome are my homes so I guess that counts them out!) Budapest for the baths, and Munich for the beer halls.
But smaller cities, Ghent in Belgium is fab, Nancy in France also (Art Neuveau) and in Italy, Verona and the Veneto, Trento and the Trentino (lakes wine castles and mountains!) are really worth visiting, not forgetting Regensburg in Germany....etc etc....

I like Edinburgh in Scotland. It's beautiful, historical, and the Scots are the nicest folks I've ever met!
As Elaine says, the one I visited last! And everything in between the most Westerly city I've been to - Lisbon, to the furthest East - Salzburg, to the most Northern - Bergen, and the most Southern, Avellino (south of Naples)!
