That it is - nevertheless many call NL Holland - even government tourist offices - but St Cirq is correct technically Holland is, I think broken in Zuid Holland and Nord Holland with Amsterdam in the middle.

<Holland
From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
This article is about the region in the Netherlands, not the country itself.

Holland is a region and former province on the western coast of the Netherlands. The name Holland is also frequently used to informally refer to the whole of the country of the Netherlands. This usage is commonly accepted in other countries, and not entirely uncommon among the Dutch themselves, though some in the Netherlands and particularly in other regions of the country may find it undesirable,[2] misleading or insulting.[3].>

"(location of American Embassy dictates the capital)"

Really? So the capital of Israel is Tel Aviv.... (until our new President moves the embassy?). I think the country in question determines its capital!

I said for the purpose of this question but opened a quagmire I should not have.

Den Haag is the defacto capital of NL if not in name.

I still have seen no reason why Amsterdam is considered the capital - nothing goes on there- can someone please explain?

Very confusing IMO.

The Hague is the seat of government. The king or queen is inaugurated in Amsterdam, for which reason it is the official capital. It's confusing but no more than the fact that the country is officially called the Kingdom of the Netherlands in plural.

Nederland is translated in French as pays bas. Which conveniently can be singular or plural.

You all know is what called the low lands before the best part of it separated.

I suppose the tram stops at de panne.
To my own shame I will add that I was born in Charleroi. But the metro there is not to be discussed - a scandal.

Good quiz pq !
