European Travel/Trivia Quiz #135
Well the last quiz was about a year ago and now that winter blahs have set in in Michigan (and laid up with broken foot) time on my hands...starting out easy.
Anyway Today's Quiz
1- Name two capital cities in Europe whose capital is not the most populous city in the country (location of American Embassy dictates the capital)?
2- What is the Michelin man's nickname or name in French and France?
3- Europe's high train station?
4- If going to Mont-Saint-Michel by train was is the closest train station?
5- This Austrian Alpine gem can be reached by train but then you take a boat across any idyllic Alpine lake to the town itself?
6- Why was the Schengen Agreement named so and why?
7- Belgium's only remaining Vicinal inter-urban tram line runs between what two cities?
8- Alencon France is known for traditionally making what?
9- Two old foot tunnels run under the Thames in the London area - what are they called?
10- Where was Karl Marx born (his house there can be visited) and where is he buried?
Well hope you have fun with these quizzes as seemingly before.
Cheers!

Sorry to hear about the foot - what did you do?>
not sure just heard a popping whilst walking- thanks for the note.
Well Greenwich is the name of one tunnel (I think that's the name but if connects Greenwich with the Isle of Dogs!)
The other one is further down the Thames- also named after its main town- ferries also cross the Thames there.

#6 It was signed in the village of Schengen in Luxembourg because it's symbolically located close to the border with Germany and France.
#1 Surely Berlin is the biggest city in Germany? I would have thought somewhere like Malta?
#10 Chemnitz, formerly called Karl Marx Stadt?

The American Embassy in the Netherlands is in the Hague, but Amsterdam is the capital, even though it isn't the seat of government, so you have a strange definition of the capital of a country.
But by your definition Amsterdam is more populous than the Hague so the Hague would be a correct answer.
Sorry about the foot, I hope it heals quickly.

#1 - Bern and The Hague (Embassy was key) - I guess NL has two capitals but the foreign countries all have embassies in Den Haag not Amsterdam, where U.S. has a Consulate. But I guess that's up for debate.

The Tramways vicinaux or Buurtspoorwegen were a system of narrow gauge tramways or local railways in Belgium, which covered the whole country and had a greater route length than the mainline railway system. They were 1,000 mm (3 ft 3 3⁄8 in) gauge (metre gauge) and included electrified city lines and rural lines using steam locomotives and diesel railcars; half the system was electrified.
Only the coastal line, the Charleroi metro and the short line to the caves at Han-sur-Lesse are still in commercial use; four museums hold significant collections of rolling stock, including the museum at Schepdaal and the ASVi museum in Thuin.
St Cirq got one end of the coastal vicinal line right but still need the southern one, near the French border. And the others mentioned are also vestiges that I did not realize but the coastal line is the only real long-distant one- it goes thru several swank seaside resorts - good day trip from nearby Bruges.
With MaineGG's and flanneruk's contributions all the correct answers are given.
WoinParis only two correct - D- but for a European an E!
Cheers!

OK I believe you, for sure - you are a Dutch resident.
But I cached the fact that for this question where the embassies are would be the criteria.
If Amsterdam is the capital why are the embassies in Den Haag- what is Den Haag if not also a capital if not the seat of power (King is head of state and yes royal palace is in Amsterdam but what real government work goes on in Amsterdam?

I guess even the monarch is based in Den Haag. There seems to be nothing in Amsterdam though like hetismij this link says Amsterdam is the capital of the Netherlands (but not Holland?)
