So, people. Here is a new one. One that has been mentioned a couple of times but there hasn´t been a sample. It is Indo-European, and it is endangered. NO GOOGLING:

Sikjibosko parlamentosko kammiba bare komujenna, koonen hin aune aro vauro themmenna, hin dou-va, te lenna lenas retta, sar joon hajuvena drabaven elle rannen.Bi doolen koonen hin ajasaave prob-leeme na endo buut, ta doolesko doh besko grupposke na lokke te lahhes louve, te rikkaves lenge skoo-liba.

Clever. It doesn't look like it, does it? But since I had to google to identify it, I'm not joining in.

And yes, my last was Faroese.

Now, shall we explore the various regional languages of Spain, or what about this one - spoken by about 70,000 people living in the last European country you would expect them to have maintained their culture in:

Pøedewšìm dŸe nìtko wo prašenje, haè nastupi zwjazk dalše sudniske jednanje. W nim móh³o wo škody w tak mjenowanym klumpowym domje hiæ. Jón su w prìnim jednanju, w kotrymž dŸìše h³ownje wo wopaèny zatwar basenkow, wuspinkowali. „Naši prawiznicy nìtko pruwuja, wo kotru hódnotu móh³o w druhim jednanju hiæ a haè so to za nas zadani“, rjekny Brycka. Po wšìm zdaæu jedna so wo nìhdŸe 30 000 do 40 000 eurow. Mjeztym wšak tež DrježdŸanski knježerstwowy prezidiji na bórzomny rozsud wo pøichodŸe kupjele t³óèi. Wšako pochadŸachu wottam spìchowanske srìdki, kotrež njejsu nìtko w zawrjenej kupjeli prawje wužiwane.

No Patrick, it doesn´t look like it. That is how it looks like in Finland. I am wondering how different it is in southern Europe (OK, now I gave it away).

The last example looks very Slavic. But since there are no Slavic people in Spain, my guess is: some Jewish language, spoken by Jews who at one time or another have settled in Spain.

PatrickLondon Feb 11th, 2005 06:24 AM

Elina - Roma or Sinti, then (but I only guessed that from the context I found it in).

Sorry, the Spanish thing was an unintentional red herring, since I changed my mind halfway through the sentence. You're on the right track to being with, think further north.

Patrick's thing looked Slavic to me, too. It looks a little like the Polish I see at the Polish deli in my local farmers market.

By the way, if you're telling up we can't Google to fin the answer, I hope you're not using Google to "cheat" and find the text that you post! :)

I'm guessing it was <i>you,</i> Sheila, that met Stivell.

My most enduring recollection was a concert at the Usher Hall in Edin. that went into so many encores that they finally turned off the electricity to the stage, to a chorus of several thousand whistles and boos. Stivell &amp; co. said words to the effect of okay, if that's how you want it, and moved their gear out to the street and conducted another hour's acoustic concert spilling out onto Lothian Rd. etc. People howling and stomping and various flags waving, it was quite a scene.

I just noticed that Patrick's is a minority language, so it can't be Polish.

Elina's looks like Finnish to me, but then so did several of the other ones that weren't Finnish (but were Finno-Ugric). But I don't think Finnish is endangered, so how about Saami? Did we do that one yet?

jahoulih Feb 11th, 2005 06:42 AM

Patrick's is Sorbian, a Slavic language still spoken by some in Germany. I guessed without googling, but googled to confirm.

Here's a thread that some people will find interesting: http://www.fodors.com/forums/threads...mp;tid=1017067 It can no longer be found during the search function (apparently was dropped during one of Fodors' recent &quot;improvements), so it may become permanently lost unless we link to it or top it now and then.

111op Feb 11th, 2005 06:53 AM

cmt: I guess now I know the answer it's easy to work backwards (if you type &quot;minorized languages&quot; into the search box, the thread will show up).

cmt Feb 11th, 2005 06:56 AM

111op: I DID that and it didn't show up. Instead I got a thread with the same title pointing out that this one was no longer searchable and giving the link. Maybe now that there's today's current post on it it will be &quot;un-lost&quot;?

cmt Feb 11th, 2005 06:57 AM

The search still doesn't bring it up for me, 111op.

111op Feb 11th, 2005 06:58 AM

That's weird -- it's the first thread listed after the search for me....

Maybe you should try closing the Fodors window and opening again?

Computers.... You never know what can act up. Friday at work my computer proceeded to degenerate with successive reboots. They finally reformatted my entire hard drive.

cigalechanta Feb 11th, 2005 07:58 AM

I'm guessing it is Slovanian.

GreenDragon Feb 11th, 2005 09:01 AM

OK, this is not a European language, exactly... though it is spoken by some! Extra points to those that get it (without googling!) (my father speaks this language fluently, but did not learn it as a child).

tlhIngan Hol jatlhwI'pu'vaD wIcherpu'. naDev vuDmey Daj lutmey Sagh je DalaDlaH, 'ach tlhIngan Hol DayajnIS. Hoch jar chovnatlh chu' wImuch. yIlaD. yIqeq. tugh bIpo'choH.

cmt Feb 11th, 2005 10:38 AM

It looks like an artificial language or code. Maybe if the letters are switched around it will make sense.

jahoulih Feb 11th, 2005 10:55 AM

Let me guess, GreenDragon: Do people who speak this language also go to conventions to meet William Shatner and Leonard Nimoy?

Spygirl Feb 11th, 2005 12:03 PM

ohmygod- I've seen that! That's-KLINGON!

cmt Feb 11th, 2005 12:11 PM

Here's an easier one. What's this?

El x&egrave; un orso, fia mia; nol se diverte &eacute;lo, e nol vol che se divertimo gnanca nu. E s&igrave;, sav&egrave;? co giera da maridar, dei spassi no me ne mancava. Vegniva i parenti, vegniva i amici, anca qualche zovene; ma no ghe giera pericolo, figurarse.

Italian. Much easier than Klingon :)
