Eurail East

I will be traveling from Vienna to Budapest to Prague using the East rail pass. Is there a big difference between first and second class and what are the differences? From Budapest to Prague will be going overnight and plan on getting a sleeper. What are they like and again difference between second and first class? How far in advance are reservations necessary? We arrive in Prague at around 5:30 AM - any suggestions as to what to do at that early of an hour as it will not be possible to check into our accomomdations.

just checked and there are no sleepers available on this train only couchettes. I've seen pictures and they look most uncomfortable and hold 6 to a room. We have 3 and hence would be with strangers. Is there any reason I shouldn't just stick with a seat and try to sleep there. How uncomfortable is that and how about safety?

Hi cliff,

Even less comfortable than a couchette. If you take turns sleeping, you should have all of your belongings when you arrive.

What's your itinerary? Maybe we can help tweak it.

we are going from vienna to budapest to prague to vienna. will spend 2 days in budapest (one nite) and then take the overnite train to prague with 3 days in Prague. Anyway, from the sounds of it it is not safe even in first class if one dares fall aslepp. But isn't the couchette's a bit cozy for comfort, especially an overnite with 3 strangers? thanks

I try to (and do)avoid those overnighters.
Sleep is never good quality for me.
It is like trying to sleep trans Atlantic, or worse.

Thanks for the responses. We have changed our plans to 2 nites in Budapest and will take the 6:20 am train that arrives at 1:20 in Budapest. Wondering if we should go 1st or 2nd class. What are the differences. Thanks again.
