You can try for touts along the Royal Mile - but don't set your heart on finding tickets. I have seen a few folks selling their tickets when the weather was really bad. But that is not something you can count on. Also if you are staying in one of the upscale hotels, the concierage "might" be able to score tickets for you, at a price.
You can hear some of the music from outside - but it doesn't carry really well since the grandstands are high and tend to hold the music in. Bagpipes can be heard down the road a bit - but much of the other music gets garbled . . . .

The Royal Tattoo is a MUST! If you cannot find tickets, you will be able to hear it from outside the arena. The atmosphere is electric all around the city so if you miss actually seeing it you will still feel the energy. Hopefully, you will get tickets though! Good Luck!
