We (2 adults and 2 teens) are travelling next April but because we will be gone over Easter I just wanted to sketch this out and get some feedback.

Arrive in Venice Thursday April 13th.
April 13th-16th (Easter Sunday) in Venice
April 17th (Easter Monday) Train to Naples - to avoid closures on Easter Monday
April 18th - visit Pompeii & Mt Vesuvius
April 19th - Train to Rome
April 19th - April 21st Rome
April 22nd Fly Home

Does that seem reasonable and workable?

I don't think that I would bother with training all the way to Naples and paying for two nights at a hotel just to rush through Pompeii and Vesuvius in a day.

I suggest that you would be better off adding the tme to Rome.

I don't know if you already have flights booked or anything, but you might want to consider flying into Naples and out of Venice.

Trying to keep more or less the same layout/time in each city you described, I personally would fly in to Naples on the 13th, go to Pompeii and Vesuvius on the 14th, and take the train up to Rome either late evening of the 14th/early morning of the 15th.

I'd then spend the 15th-17th in Rome - might as well spend Easter there, I'm sure there are lots of huge and exciting events (which you may not want and thus planned for Venice those dates), and train up to Venice overnight to then spend the 18-22 in Venice.

This allows the same amount of time in each city that you were looking at, but a little less back and forth traveling.

Just my opinion.

If you want to keep the order you had in your original itinerary, I agree with Ira - I'd skip Pompeii and tack the extra time on to Rome.

According to my calendar, Easter this year, i.e., 2005, is on March 27...

My kids REALLY want to see Pompeii so it is a must part of the trip. I will check and see about flying into Naples and out of Venice as suggested.

The train to Naples is relatively speedy (I think it's 2 hours from Rome), so I don't think it's that necessary to consider flying in out of Naples. Why add to the stress of your trip?

I'd look into what might be open on Easter monday -- maybe you can hit the beach or visit Pompeii then if the museums are closed. Also, a quick trip to Herculaneum is probably preferable to a climb up Vesuvius. But you might find a tour group that includes all of the above.

Personally I would spend April 17 through 21st in Rome and do a day trip to Pompei. It will be a long day but I think it is still easier than giving up more days in Rome staying in Naples two nights just to visit Pompei. It shoul take you about 3 and a half hours to reach Pompeii from Rome, then four hours or so to see much of Pompei. You could leave Rome at 7 AM and be back by 7 pm.
