Tuscany,Rome,Pompeii???
I am planning on going to Italy in Oct. and will be spending 2 nights in Venice taking the train to Florence and spending 3 nights and then renting a car going to Tuscany for 3 nights and driving to Rome for 3 and heading home from there. Just realized we have 2 more nights and not sure where to add on The days added would be either Tuscany, Rome or somewhere in between the two. We were thinking of adding one night to Rome and going to see Pompeii but not sure if that is do-able by car or if we would have to take a train or if it is just too far.
Any suggestions would be appreciated.

Hi Judy - Personally I would add 1 night to Venice (- especially if you haven't been before) - and 1 to Rome.
You're extra day in Rome would allow you to do a day-trip to Pompeii.
Pompeii is easy enough by train - with a change of train in Naples.
You won't need the car in Rome - so you could drop it on arrival, or return it somewhere north of Rome (- e.g. Orvieto)to avoid driving in the city.
Hope this helps ...

I think going to Pompeii as a day trip is too much for your itinerary, which already has a lot of moving around. Pompeii is a very large city in itself (abeit when where the buildings were destroyed),
I suggest you add a day to Venice and add a day to Roma but enjoy Roma.
I suggest you drop off your car in Orvieto.

I would add at least a day to Venice -- that way you'd have a little more time at the beginning of the trip to relax and get over jet lag before trying any serious sightseeing. There is so much to enjoy in Venice, especially if you get away from the usual tourist epicenters of San Marco and the Rialto.
