Dubrovnik lodging - Old Town or outside the wall?
I'll spend a couple nights in Dubrovnik at the conclusion of a business trip to Montenegro later this month. It looks as though there are plentiful rooms and apartments in private buildings that are vastly less expensive than the regular hotels... e.g. this listing:

If my wife were along, I might spring for a nice hotel, but since I'm on my own a cheaper room will do fine. Any suggestions?
I'm guessing that staying in the Old Town would be more scenic and memorable, but maybe not.

Balto,
I would vote to stay outside the walls but a short walk to the walls. The view of the walls is beautiful rather than being in it.
With that said, there are a number of apts right outside the walls you can try. I know Villa Adriatic is a popular one among fodorites. We stayed in a fantastic hotel, but as per your post, you'd be just as fine with a small room.

You may want to do a search for Dubrovnik on here because I believe I answered a very similar question yesterday or a few days ago.
In any event, I too would stay just outside the city walls. I liked that we were close enough to walk to historic center in just a minute or so but we also had an amazing view that I don't think one would get by staying within the walls themselves.
If you are looking for a place with a great view and great location, I will again recomment Villa Adriatica (http://www.dubrovnik-online.com/villa_adriatica/). Its literally about half a minute from Ploce gate (one of the gates into the walled section of town) and the views were amazing.

You could also check out
www.dubrovnik-private-accommodations.com
They have several rooms within the Old Town, and several apartments with views just outside the Polce Gate.
I have reserved Lukre 2 for October!

I stayed inside the walls last September at a sobe called Villa Ragusa (http://villaragusa.netfirms.com/).
At that time a single room was 30 Euro. The single room was fairly small but very clean and had a small television, the room had a shared bath. There are also 3 double rooms in the villa which have en suite baths.
The owner, Petar, was just terrific and I liked the location because I could walk anywhere in the old town from there.
Enjoy your trip...I thought Croatia was just beautiful!

As Tripgirl will tell you, I recommended the nearby Villa Dubrovnik...slightly less $ than the equally wonderful Argentina, but also sporting excellent views of the Old Town..beautiful establishment on a rocky crag overlooking the sea. They have a little jitney boat that transports their guests to Old Town in a few minutes.
Oops, tried to get to their web page so I could print their address....closed for reconstruction for the rest of 2007!!Sorry..but they'll be open next year.

Decision time!
I am trying to decide between a studio apartment in the Old Town on Zamanjina, and a room with bath that's 150 m from the Ploce Gate, just up the hill from the Excelsior Hotel, with a sea view a partial view of the Old Town.
Both are 50 euros/night. (Not bad at all!) Both have AC. The room in Ploce has a parking place, and I'll be driving a rental. That might tip the decision... along with the thought of hanging out on the terrace of the Excelsior

I stayed inside the walls at the Hotel Stari Grad, and one of the best things was being able to wander in the early morning and late at night before and after the daytrippers (from cruise ships) arrived or departed. The old town can be depressingly crowded during the day, and I found myself spending time on the back streets or at a bar just outside the wall. The old city, during midday, was miserable -- very large groups following a guide holding an umbrella, cluttering up streets, monopolizing restaurants and intruding on every photo opportunity. I was only able to get good photos, without hundreds of people milling around, during the very early morning or late at night.

I ended up taking the place outside the gate, but I definitely plan to spend mornings in the Old Town with my camera. Even without the issue of tourists crowding shots, I find that early morning has the best light for photos. (One of the few advantages to my body's inability to sleep past dawn.)

BaltoTraveler: Would be interested in knowing where you have booked in Dub. We are booked into a apt. up above the Excelcior Hotel. It sounds like it is a bit of a climb up to it, tho. If you have time to post, will be interested in your assessment of the area around the Ex. Hotel. Ciao!!mhm

Mercy -
It's this place: http://www.dubrovnik-residence.com/
It seems to be only a little bit up the hill from the main coastal road (on Lazarina Street, half-way between the coastal road and the next road running parallel), so I'm not concerned about having to sweat too much on the walk back from the Old Town.

BaltoTravler: Thanks for your reply. I am even more intereted in hearing from you about your opinion of the area when you return. The reason: the place we have rented is also on Lazarina Street--at #2. My husband and I booked it in February to be sure that we had a location when we end our tour in Dub.
The place looks nice with a view of the ocean and a terrace, or patio, which is all we want. Too bad you are not going in Sept. You could be our neighbor up the street--or down, depending on how many steps there are. Ciao! mhm
