Dublin or Shannon?

I am planning on my first trip to Ireland and will spend approx 1 week in Ireland. Don't know whether to visit Dublin or Shannon? Can I do both in a week? Any suggestions for a real good feel of Ireland in 1-week. Single male traveling alone...taking bus and trains- - always a must ! Thank you !

You can do it but not very thoroughly..I suggest you fly into Shannon and out of Dublin...its easier to drive from Shannon. Near Shannon is Ennis....great B&B is Kilmoon House on Kildysart road...super family. In Dublin stay in Clara House a lovely guest house owned by a friend of ours...tell them Marilynn sent you

Trains aren't a great option in Ireland especially if starting in the west. They are laid out like spokes in a wheel from Dublin. Buses will give you more options options. None of it will be terribly fast.

Things to know. There is nothing in Shannon itself. I mean nothing. It's mainly an airport with some industry in the general area. You would have easier access to transportation from Dublin. Dublin has plenty to do and there are some nice day trips from there that are available from various tour companies. Public buses to other cities and villages are pretty available.

If you are looking for larger cities and towns to visit for night life then Dublin and Galway are good and Cork is slowly getting a reputation as a town to visit (but not drive in). The west coast is known for it's scenery though much of it is not easily accessible by public transit.

More of what your interests are would help us help you.

Go to Dublin. Lots to do and see. Plenty of pubs, shopping and sites. Tours to Malahide Castle are available from Dublin and there seems like there was a big race track (horses) south of Dublin. Bill is right, there really is nothing in Shannon but the airport and Durty Nelly's (pub) and maybe one little shopping area with about 3 stores.

You don't say how old you are. If you are 'young at heart' you could take a PaddyWagon tour (They have a website) out of Dublin and get a good feel of Ireland in about 6-days.

If you decide against a tour (i.e., are on your own) To avoid backtracking consider an itinerary in which you arrive at one and depart from the other. More important might be the dates of your visit (i.e., what's happening where).

Shannon airport in Co. Clare is gateway to the Southwest: Limerick, Kerry and Cork. You can get BusEireann at the airport for either Limerick City (Co. Limerick) or Ennis (Co. Clare). From its Limerick City hub, Bus Eireann has service to Tralee or Cork. From Ennis you can continue to Galway, Connemara or to Doolin.

I visit Ireland frequently and travel mostly by public transportation: If you have a B&B reserved, it's often the case that the B&B Operator will come down to the bus stop to pick you up.

There's pretty good train service between Dublin & Cork, Dublin & Kerry or Dublin & Limerick.
