Driving in Ireland

Hi all

Just wondering if anyone has any comments to offer on the difference between driving in Ireland in June and August/September. We will be hiring a car for two weeks in either June or August/September and wondering if the roads are more or less busy at these times. We will be travelling the usual tourist routes - Cashel,Kerry,Dingle,Cliffs etc.
We are from Australia so left hand drive isn't a problem.

We've driven in Ireland in June and in September and outside of cities like Galway it was fairly quiet. I think I would suggest that June and September may be more alike in terms of traffic and road congestion(or lack of it) and that August and July shold be grouped together as being busier. And the earlier in June or the later in September the less road congestion.
But Ireland is simply beautiful at any time!! Enjoy.

I'd ditto what MaggieOB says. June isn't high season and neither is September. July/August are the busiest times for traffic/sites/accommodations. Most European schools are in session in June and Sept so there are few families on the road.

August will be busier, yes. June and September are more like shoulder season, so it will be less crowded. However, other than in Dublin itself, I've never had a big problem with traffic in Ireland.

As for schools, when we went in June (last part of June) in 2006, there were busload after busload of Italian school children, so the end of June may be more crowded from that

June days are very long in Ireland and that's an advantage if you have any long driving days planned.
