Driving in Greece
We are on a cruise from Istanbul to Athens and are considering renting cars rather than taking shipboard excursions in Athens and on some of the islands. What are in and outs of renting a car on Santorini, Corfu and Crete? I have already read other threads about driving out of Athens.

If you're a competent and cautious driver it's not a problem. Road signs are in Greek and phonetic English. If you are from the USA or Canada be sure to pick up an International Driving Permit at your local AAA/CAA office, no test required.

I've rented a car in Athens (to do a two day trip to Meteora) as well as Crete and Santorini. Not a problem. As brotherleelove said, if you're a competent driver you'll be fine.
If you're landing at Santorini on a cruise ship, I'd say definitely get a car, if it makes sense timewise. The beauty of Santorini is driving around and seeing the entire island. Oia is the best but also, so many small areas/beaches/wineries to visit.
