Message: Here is my dilema!!!! it's our honeymoon and the first place is Rome! We're staying in a B&B at Trastevere! I've heard nice things about it. After 3 days we are going to Capri, but the question is, should we rent a car to drive to Naples? After Capri we are definetly driving up to Florence, so we need a car. But where to leave the car? Naples? Before taking the ferry to Capri we want to walk through Naples and Positano.... and take the last ferry to Capri! So the car may be helpfull to leave the luggage while we walk aroud.
What should we do? Rent the car after Capri? Where is a good location to rent it? Naples's airport? We are going to return the car in Rome.

Train. Basically use the train for everything except for what' you can't do with train. Limit the car rental at the minimum. Also, if you are just staying in Florence, you will not need a car. You may consider renting it for just one day, for a little sidetrip.

The thing is... how am I goint to walk around Naple/Pompei/Sorrento before going to Capri carrying all my luggage?
And in florence we are planing to do Day trips to Siena, Montepultiano and some more places. When we leave Capri we are defitnily renting a car to drive up to Florence.

Leave your stuff at the station!!! And, as I have said before, wait until you are in Florence to rent your car. Driving from Naples to Florence will take you more time and be more tiresome than going by train. And cost you more. Rent the car ONLY for the daytripos, because it will be impossibile to park it in Florence.

Listen to Alice. She is giving you excellent advice. The only thing i will add is that you cannot walk Naples/Pompei/Sorrento all in one day. Stick to Naples, Know what you want to see there and don't kill yourself by trying to do too much.

Drive if you want the experience. Take the train (Eurostar) if you want convenience. Get off Eurostar from Rome to Naples at Garibaldi.

From Roma to Napoli, there are cheap stopping trains every hour as well as intercity and Eurostar trains. There is a left-luggage office at Napoli Centrale station. From there, the Circumvesuviana train goes every half hour to Pompei Scavi station which is next to the ruins. For Capri, there are boats from Napoli and from Sorrento which is at the end of the Circumvesuviana line. The traffic in Napoli is a nightmare and you do not want to be in a car in the area.

I say drive. It's the only way to see the countryside. You can cut off onto any little dirt road and see where it leads you. Be adventurous! If you want to see Naples and Positano - you can't walk it.

I am with the train advocates.We are North Americans and will be living, again, in Italy for 9 months next year and will not own a car. It's a train-bus kind of a country except when essential. You simply cannot imagine driving in either Naples or Florence if you haven't been there and, believe me, this is not an activity for a honeymoon.The stress could bring on an early divorce!

As somebody else said, you can always rent a car for a day trip out of Florence, Siena, for example, if you want the experience of driving Italian roads in a sane way.

I lived in Naples for three years and believe me, the only people that should be driving there are Neopolitans and Foreign drivers (like myself) who have had the experience of manuevering around those streets. I thought nothing of pausing then going through red lights, passing into oncoming traffic and freeway shoulders. It's definetly an experience not for the timid.
