Drive times from Munich
How long will it take to get to Dachau from Munich and how much time should we allow for the trip and site.
Also, is anyone aware of a website in english that discusses open times/costs etc??
I have checked out the viamichelin site recommended by several on the board BUT do you find that the TIME they post is fairly accurate and accounts for the faster driving that is allowed on German motorways?
Interested in going to Chiemsee (sp???), Eagle's Nest, Neuschwanstein. Can they be grouped in such a way maximize time and minimize driving? Have to go back and forth from Munich for our hotel. BUT don't mind driving and coming back later at night isn't an issue.
thanks in advance!

It's 25 to 45 minutes, depending on where you originate within Munich.
I think that viamichelin generally is pretty accurate for Germany. I was disappointed last fall when all the time estimates seemed too sgort for Normandy and Brittany.
As for Dachau details, click on "Notes for visitors" on http://www.kz-gedenkstaette-dachau.de/english
Best wishes,
Rex

To do Chiemsee from Munich and back will take all of a full day. Then to do Eagle's Nest, you have to go past Chiemsee again to get to Bertchesgarden/Eagle's Nest, and back to Munich. Neuschwanstein is a one day trip in and of itself, heading due South.
Then you have Linderhof, Attal, and Oberamergau which can all be done in one day.
I would base myself somewhere around the Garmish area. There are all kinds of things to do and see within driving distance.

Dachau is directly on the Sbahn line -so go by train. Mike makes fair comments on rest of journey. Bear in mind train tíckets value - they were about $17 for a day ticket which covered up to 5 adults anywhere in Bavaria - the petrol will cost you more than that.

thanks for the help! I don't expect to do everything on the list but it helps to know times and take that into consideration. I will have to decide which places are most important.
Sounds like it is easy to take the train to Dachau---that saves 1 day of car rental!

Sharon,
do plan to go to Dachau on a weekend, if possible, since a non-profit group gives English-language tours Sat & Sun (except during low season). Tours start around 12:30 (I think) and they are super informative and interesting. Our tour actually lasted 2.5 hours because everyone had so many questions.
Tour is free, but donations are accepted (and well earned). Let me know if you need more info.
Definitely take the S-Bahn to Dachau. Much better than car.

IMO, Chiemsee is best traveled to by train (an hour-long trip), which leaves Munich central station every hour. It's the mid-way point to Salzburg (another must see!)

sharon,
I don't know how much research you have done about Dachau. I thought I had done quite a bit before we went last year.
After we returned, I started digging deeper and found (Google) an article from one of the soldiers who liberated the camp. You won't believe it! This is not the stuff they normally put out. It is over the top. I wish I had this knowledge prior to visiting the camp. It just adds to the complete horror of what happened there. Dachau, a must see.
Yes, take the S-Bahn.
Curious

thanks for the info on Dachau unfortunately we will only be in Munich mid week.
But at least they play the movie in English and we will do our best to make the time.
Haven't done much research just knew it was close to Munich and some of the info I have read on this board. I have heard others are better but at this time we are going because it is the one we are near.
