drive or train to Rome
We will be in San Gimiagno in September with friends. Can anyone tell us would it be better to drive into Rome (we have heard that traffic is bad) or turn in our rental car and train in, also if we train in should we turn in our car and train from Florence or Sienna?

At 8.35am there's a regional train from Poggibonsi/San Gimignano to Florence which arrives at 9.48 then take the Eurostar at 9.59 It arrives in Rome at 11.50 just in time for lunch. If you miss the 9.59 the next one is at 10.53 which gets into Rome at 12.30pm

We had the same question on our recent trip to Italy. We were going from Castellina in Chianti to Rome with a stop in Orvieto and debated whether to just train from Orvieto or drive all the way to Rome. After having driven in Italy for the prior two weeks my husband decided he was up to the challenge of driving into Rome. Most of the car rental returns are at the Borghese Gardens. It was really easy to return the car there, although just be sure you know you have to go into the underground parking - that is where all the car rental returns are.
