Domus Aurea Rome
Hi Folks, I will be in Rome the beginning of June. I sent an e-mail requesting a reservation for Domus Aurea in February. They said try back in Spring. I sent another one last week and they said they couldn't take reservations to just come the day I wanted a tour. Am I sending to the right place to make a reservation. I sent to Rome Guide. Thanks

I don't think you need to worry about making a reservation this far in advance (as you need to for the Scavi tour). I have been to Nero's twice, in March of 2002 and 2003 and was able to make reservations when I arrived in Rome for a couple of days later. This year we stayed in an apartment right around the block from the Domus Aurea and just wandered over the day before our reservation and were able to join a tour. The guidebooks suggest showing up in the late afternoon as the best time for entry without a reservation.
We are archeology/excavation freaks and were fascinated by Nero's. When I think of it my first thought is always of the room which was open to the outside and looked down rolling pastures and the lake where the Colosseum now stands.

Ask your hotel if they will make a reservation for you. Give them two times and/or dates. Our hotel (Fontanella Borghese) was very helpful in making (and changing!) our reservation.
Even though you're going in early June, be advised that it's a bit chilly inside the Domus Aurea. You're essentially below ground.

I bought my ticket to Domus Aurea online from omniticket.it. I can't remember where I got the link from at this point. I went the end of January and I was the only one for that time period!! I didn't take a guided tour but there is an audiotour you can rent plus the guide/guard that went with me spoke a bit of English. It was fabulous. If you are into it, you can purchase a 15 page article from Archeology magazine for under $5 - you pay online and they email you a password to download it.
Have a wonderful time,
