If you want some marriage proposals and propositions, go for an early morning walk on the Las Vegas Strip! All the bachelor parties are just ending, and the drunk, "eager" men are stumbling back to their hotels. I had planned on an easy stroll on the cool, empty streets one morning and it ended up being quite a hoot!

Nothing stops a man if he thinks he can score!

Scarlett, you got that one right! He'll walk barefooted over broken glass!

I think Scarlett has these same powers of perception. I am a blue-eyed blonde--is that why I was harassed so much in Turkey?!?! Next time I'll temporarily go brunette before visiting that country....or better yet, I'll get the Groucho mask.

To Scarlett again, funny you should mention Acapulco. When my grandparents were first married they went to Acapulco often. One day they came down to the pool together. My grandmother sat by the pool, but as soon as Grandfather dove into the water, a man approached Grandmother to "make passes," as she put it. Grandfather was no small man and it was no secret they were married, so this man was pretty courageous (or stupid) to approach her with Grandfather only a few feet away. She did not tell Grandfather, as she knew he would cause an international incident.

Texas Aggie, that is very funny. You must be very attractive to fetch 10 camels. I wonder what kind and how much livestock I am worth in Turkey....never mind, I don't want to know. I'm afraid the offer would be in goats, as DH tells me I'm stubborn.

And I get annoyed when I go to Italy if I am not flirted with! Well there you go, you can't please everyone.

TexasAggie, my mother-in-law had a similar story in Morocco, and someone offered 10 camels for her too. She was an attractive, middle-aged dyed blonde at the time. And she's not American, but European, although I can't say that anyone would have known that. I have to think that these offerings of camels are a joke, because whenever has anyone taken this offer up? But she thought it was serious at the time.

I've never found that wearing a wedding ring made any difference, but I always found that pushing a baby in a stroller really helped.. No more doors were opened for me or I was never helped with packages, even though that was when I really needed help, but loose the baby and everything changed. Of course those were my younger years. Now that I am older I'm kinda flattered when I get hit on, and when I don't like it I have the maturity to put that person in his place.

Degas must be "the man" in the relationship with her lover.

summersquash, I sure found that having a baby brought lots of attention - from older women! But almost all of them were very nice. Of course my children were so adorable that how could they help it ?

WillTravel, it won't make much difference in winter when everyone is wearing gloves...

Cheers, Suze, you get full marks for consistency: "For those, I'd suggest thinking about how you present yourself." LOL, for sure it's the fault of the person being hit on! A hotel guest's things are stolen from a locked suitcase in their hotel room--it's their fault too! My goodness, is there any mishap that can befall a traveler that you DON'T believe is the traveler's fault?

FYI, the last time I was hit on was yesterday. I was walking my dog in the park, wearing a heavy, bulky coat and scarf and looking at the fallen chestnuts on the ground. Yes, Suze, of course a man could construe that as being interested in his advances!

I am curious about what you all are terming "approached", "hit on", "harassed". Just what is it that happens?

I can't think of what a person speaking a foreign language says to you or does he use sign language?

Surely not the old pinch on the butt routine, still? I have never been pinched in Europe but I did have a man on a bus hiss in my ear, is that harrassment? Yes that is h--- not p---.

I didn't have North Africa factored into our travel plans, but that could change. What price would 10 camels fetch on the open market these days?

Disappointingly, I haven't found that removing my wedding ring improves my chances of being harassed.

Italy? Turkey? Morocco? No! The place you really have to worry about is BELGIUM!!! I've never encountered such flirtatious (downright lecherous!) men. It was fabulous!

I'm wondering if we are all on the same sheet of music when it comes to what classifies as being "hit on."

Of course, if you have it done to you all the time, as is with myself, I guess you can tell right away. But for those less fortunate, what are THE SIGNS that betray a mans' selfish, primative, banal intentions?

Be nice now and offer up no obvious nasty stuff!
