Do you need hotel reservations in Rome and Tuscany?
My wife and I will be travelling in Rome and Tuscany in late March. Will we need hotel reservations or will we be able to find vacancies? We would like to find out of the way places and don't know if we can find them until we get there. Any suggestions?

What you will be able to find will be the picked-over places that represent a bad bargain, in the crummy locations, where the one and only daughter that speaks any English has left town for a few days.

and the place that you really wanted will be the one just around the next curve, but you didn't know it was there because you didn't do any research ahead of time, and besides you were getting so tired and...
Hi
May I suggest that you make your reservations in Rome and then ask your hotel to help you with a reservation in the next town, and that hotel help you with the next town, etc.
Keep in mind that you will either find a perfect little place that you will remember the rest of your life, OR a perfectly horrid little place that you will remember the rest of your life.

What a bunch of totally hateful or useless responses! wonder why they waste their time?

To answer your question, I would say yes. March is not the high season of course, but there are many tourists there year-round and it's a really good feeling to know ahead of time that you have reservations in a nice, cheery place. If you put in -Tuscany- for example - as you search on this board, you will find many places that people have stayed in. And most have email addresses, so you can give them a try. It is nice to be spontaneous, but rather risky.

(we're goin in march also and I've had great fun organizing the trip as you will too!)

Good luck!

I do not totally agree with the previous poster. For sure you will need reservations in Rome in ANY period of the year and any day of the week, while in Tuscany much depends on where and when you are going. If you do not sleep in Florence, Pienza and the other famous places (and I assure you that smaller places are almost as fascinating, just skip Piombino, Quarrata, Livorno, Poggibonsi and a very small number of other places) you are bound to find vacancies.

We had hotel reservations for Rome, Florence and Siena last year. We also drove around Tuscany and just found places to stay. That worked very well for us and all of our hotels were nice. Now we don't require 4 star luxury, just clean with a private bath. In all the cities we had our choice of places and were not left with the "picked-over places that represent a bad bargin etc..." This was in late May so I would think March would be fine.
