Just inside the ancient walls of Montepulciano, you will see shops in which the local vintners offer tastings of their famous Vino Nobile de Montepulciano. It's toursity but fun - try them out and you're bound to find a few that you enjoy, and might want to purchase. Then spend an afternoon in Montepulciano - a beautiful and historic hill town. In one of the shops, there is a stairwell to the basement where Etruscan tombs were uncovered. Our favorite Tuscan town is Cortona, where we were fortunate to spend a week in 2001. Despite its new-found fmae (Frances Mates' books), it is holding up well under the tourist onslaught and when they all go home at the end of the day, it's an enchanting place. Try the Trattoria Toscana for a great lunch or dinner.
