It seems then that most American men don't have the art of flirting. I wonder why.

Hi- yes, Italian men of all ages flirt! As others have pointed out, there is a difference between flirtaciousness and lechery. In my experience, I have only been really hassled when I am alone. When I'm with a male companion though, I seldom garner much more than a friendly smile.

SeaUrchin, I'm not sure if American men aren't as adept at flirting or if it's a cultural thing -- the Puritanical stuff that tends to make Americans less comfortable with sensuality. Just a guess.

In any case, I've lived in America all my life, and my experience has been that there are plenty of natural flirters among us ... bless them all!

To me it just makes life lighter to flirt a little. I like to be flirted with, it makes me walk a little lighter and if I flirt back maybe it will lighten up the other person too.

Minerva, hopefully your Italian will give you all his attention in Italy!

Puritans? Ancient history, baby. Hot to trot and use it or lose it are today's buzz words.

Well-said, SeaUrchin. I think perhaps it has something do with an acknowledgement that both parties are capable of appreciating each other on a purely instinctive basis. As if to say, "I don't care how much money you make, how old you are, what your politics are, what country you come from, what your religion is, etc. ... I just like something about you!"

Degas, I think it's also todays sue-crazy society where lots of women think a man staring at them at work will complain to the boss that the admirer was a stalker. French woman appreciate a man sizing her up where we Americans get uncomfortable. IMHO

degas, I mean harmless flirting, just to let the person know you are glad to have had contact with him in this sea of life.

You flirt yourself right here on Fodors, you devil!!

CigaleChanta, you beat me to it! I think that's a big part of it.

There is a story (in French or Foe, I think) about a Frenchman who is being shown something on the computer by a woman (enough older to be his mother). He puts his hand on her shoulder as he is leaning over her to see the screen. She files a claim against him for sexual harrassment.

ummmm...did something weird just happen? I posted the line about Puritanical/sensuality, yet it somehow appeared under degas' moniker. Or did you just write the exact same words as I, degas?!
Bizarre!

European movies are one really excellent way to get a perspective on our sexual attitudes relative to those of Western Europe. IMO, much healthier in France & Italy, even ostensibly prissy England.

Hmmm...I posted a reply to this, but it isn't showing up (apologies if it does eventually and I duplicate it):

As a woman in her mid-50s who traveled in Italy for a total of 5 weeks in 2006, sometimes alone, sometimes with college-age daughter, and sometimes with a friend the same age, I can assure you that Italian men of all ages flirt with women of all ages.

I found it absosslutely delightful

When I would be in Italy with my husband I never noticed that stopped the Italian men of all ages from flirting with me. My husband use to chuckle. And of course he flirted with the darling Italian women. He swore up and down that Milan had the most beautiful women of all. Think it was because so many of them worked in offices and consequently were dressed so beautiful..sexy but beautiful.
You will have to give us a report about your experiences when you return from Italy minerva. Have fun!

Has anyone noticed that every single male in Milan wears the same cologne? I don't know what it is called, and if anyone does, please tell me. It is cinnamonny and musky and clovey and very detectable. All of the businessmen wear it and all the boys I hung out with in Italy did too, although I was too shy to ask what they wore.

Thank you for all the support. I am not as pretty as I used to be but it will be fun to dress for a man again. Oh Lordy am I up to this?
