Dinner in Rome

If you had only one night in Rome, what restaurant would you choose? We'd like a place with wonderful food and a charming atmosphere.

Eileen

On the night of our 40th anniversary, my wife & I had a memorable evening at Restaurant Bolognese located adjacent to Piazza di Popolo. We chose an indoor table and were seated next to a delightful American couple from NYC. He worked at ABC--on the staff of the Evening News with Peter Jennings and she at NBC, working on the staff with Tom Brokaw. A couple of tables away was a well-known Canadian concert conductor, Boris Brott, who was in Rome conducting a work of Leonard Bernstein for Pope John Paul.
If you can squeeze in a second dinner, my recommendation is a restaurant called 'Dante', about a 15 minute walk from Piazza di Popolo in the direction of the Vatican. This restaurant was recommended to us by an antiques' dealer in the area. I think I could find it from my hotel but I'm not sure of the street---except to say it's on a side street in a mostly residential area and is a delightful surprise. Ambiance is fabulous, food's wonderful and the wait staff outstanding. I hope to be in Rome later this year and will definitely make a point of returning to Dante. Good luck.

P.S. If you're flying into Fiumicino, I recommend you take an airport shuttle to your hotel. Here's a telephone number to phone to make transfer reservations prior to your arrival---
06 42 01 45 07 --- or e-mail: [email protected]
They deal in cash only.
