Debit card in Italy - Visa PLUS network

My debit card is linked to the interbank network Visa PLUS (the logo is sort of ¾ of a diamond over the word PLUS). I want to make sure I’ll be able to withdraw money in Italy using this card.

Does anyone have any words of wisdom to share? Thanks.

As long as your card has a VISA LOGO on it. Most all european banks accept it as a ATM card. check with your bank. I used numerous bank cards while on business from Mastercards to VISA to checkcards. They all have either Cirus STAR or Mastercard on them and I had no problems. But be safe and ask your Bank who issued it...

Hi M,

One of my ATM cards has "PLUS".

It worked in Italy.

Maire, you can use Visa's ATM locator which shows locations per country/city on a map.

Most all banks in Europe will take both the VISA Plus or the M/C Cirrus. I also have a credit union card linked to Plus (not VISA or M/C).

I've only found one bank in the last 5-6 years (in Ireland) that did not accept my VISA Plus and spit out cash. I just walked to another bank across the street.

Esm,

Thanks for that very useful website. I kept asking my bank for something like this and they knew nothing.

Thanks everyone! What a great link, ESM. I feel better knowing I should be able to get cash in all the towns I'm visiting. Thanks again.

Maire, your Visa Plus should work, as mine has everywhere I've tried it in Europe. But be sure to inform your bank that you will be in foreign countries, and when. Otherwise, charges could be denied.
Also, ask your bank how much foreign transaction fee they impose. This subject has been discussed many, many times on this forum. I suggest you search for it, and make sure you get the best fee (or no fee) you can find. I think Capital One may not charge any fee. I know my credit union, BellCo, charges just the Visa 1 percent. Others charge 3 percent and more.

I mentioned on another thread that upon my recent return from Europe, I was first a bit dismayed to see that Bank of America had this time (for the first time) added 1% to all my ATM foreing transactions. However, when I compared the withdrawals to the XE rates for those same days, I was happy to learn that every single transaction had first been discounted by 1 %, then that percent added back on -- so there was NO fee at all.

That website is definitely a keeper! I had just gotten off the phone with my bank trying to find out where I could access this information, and they had no clue. So I checked here and voila!

Thanks for the info.
