Hi, Will be in Rome next week for 7 days and this will be our second trip. We are considering some day trips including Ostia Antica and Hadrian's villa. Any other suggestions--something off the beaten path perhaps? We enjoy anything medieval and luv Italian hilltowns. We have already "done" Pompeii and Orvieto. Thanks for the help

Although not off the beaten path, Assisi is both medieval and a hilltown with much to see.

If you decide on Ostia Antica, stop off at St. Paul's Outside the Walls church stop. It's a short walk from the train station and then you can catch the train again and continue onto Ostia Antica which I thoroughly enjoyed, too.

I love all the churches of Europe and this is one of my favorites.

Makes a really nice day out.

The hilltown of Tarquinia, although it is more Etruscan than medieval. Rechable by train in an hour.

For something even more off the beaten path, look up train schedules to Capalbio (and look up pictures and info on the web).

I think Assisi is too far for a pleasant day trip.

The choices are numerous, limited only by how long you want to travel. You can leave Rome at 8:15 am and be in Assisi by 10:30 am, giving you almost the entire day to explore this town. You could do a very quick trip to Florence as well. I've done several daytrips to Florence from Rome but I had been to Florence before, and only went to see a specific exhibit or shop for certain items. Spoleto is another option. The train trip is about an hour and a half from Rome.

Funny you should ask this. I recently returned from a trip to Rieti with ilios travel. I rang them in the hope that they had a villa in the countryside near Rome and in the end had them source a pretty Relais as it worked out better value. Rieti was fabulous, Amatrice was very pretty, the Abbazia di Farfa was a revelation and the Lago di Vico and Lago di Bolsena were better than Bracciano which seemed to touristy for my tastes. A short stay in Viterbo is also cool.

Hadrian's Villa is in Tivoli, and if you're there would also recommend seeing the Villa d'Este. It makes an excellent day trip from Rome, as does Ostia Antica.

Hi, Wow! Thanks everybody, great suggestions. Yes, Summer 0206, I know, it will be hard to tear myself away from Rome, but Italy is waiting
