Cathy...This is one daytrip where I would hope you consider a car rental. It's about 60 miles one way, passing along the pretty Fife Coast and it's little fishing villages....scenic and fun. St. A. is not difficult for driving. This would give you a full day of meandering around St.A and stopping at a few of the villages on the way.

Hi Cathy,
If you are not used to drive on the left, it's better to take the train or a tour.
Following are links where you will find short information about visiting St Andrews.
On your own:

With a tour:

I hope this helps. St Andrews is lovely and I'm sure you will have a lovely time there.

I second the comment about the lovely Fife coast. To read about the places along this coast including St Andrews, see here http://postcards-pfte.blogspot.co.uk/search/label/Fife

Unless you're really interested in driving around the Kingdom of Fife to visit other coastal towns -such as Anstruther or Crail...great Fish'n'Chips shops there!- renting a car for a day trip to St Andrews is really not necessary.
You can get there by train + bus in about 1h30, and you can definitely walk around St Andrews and see the whole town (well, the nice areas by the coast: Golf Course, the Quad -old Uni buildings- the Castle, the Cathedral) in a day.
You can buy train tickets online on ScotRail and you can check bus timetables on Stagecoach Bus.

Strawberry...don't forget the wonderful blue van parked in the Pittenweem harbor, offering the "world's best crab cakes". Is it still there? Hopefully so. There are four women in Cathy's group, and I still think they would benefit having their own car. Most of us non UK'ers had at one time or another bitten the bullet to experience driving on the "wrong" side... the drive is one of the more gentle ones in the vicinty.
