Day Trip to Salzburg
After looking at our schedule in Munich, we pleasantly realized that we have one free day. So we are thinking of going to Salzburg. Would you suggest to take an organize tour originating from Munich or take an early train and catch maybe a Sound of Music tour or something in Salzburg. We are just looking to kill a day with no major agenda. One option as well is too to just wing it there.
Any and all thoughts are always appreciated.

Salzburg itself would be great to just wander around but if you want something a bit different - visit Hangar 7. It's an exhibition by Red Bull and is based at Salzburg Airport. My husband had read about it and was keen. The architecture of the building was interesting. We were there a few years ago but unless it's changed, it's free and you could just walk in and wander around the exhibits. A cafe and toilets there as well.

Use the bargain Bavarian Ticket to go to Salzburg and back same day for a pittance - lets you use and regional train coming and going for the whole day - right to Salzburg - must use regional trains only but those are just marginally slower than the fastest trains - about 35 for both total and can use Munich city trainsports too. Sound of Music tour sounds lovely. Buy Bavarian Ticket at station day of travel. For lots on German trains and what to expect check www.bahn.de/en - German Railways official site; www.seat61.com; BETS-European Rail Experts and www.ricksteves.com. Useful for any rail trips you may be taking - get neat discounted fares on long-distance trains by booking your own tickets online. Sound of Music tour sounds wonderful - but go by train on own and explore little by yourselves too.
Think that bargain pass also comes in first class at not much more.

A typical Sound of Music tour lasts about 4 hours. Panorama operates large buses (least expensive option). There are some smaller van tours as well. We did that a number of years ago (not sure of the company) and enjoyed that. To keep the costs down they brought along one other family (reporter and photographer from a major US newspaper). The film locations are scattered about and would require more than one day if you want to do-it-yourself. The tours do not include all locations (two houses were used as the film house of the von Trapps; you will see one); generally the tours do not include the real von Trapp home since it is in a quiet residential area (and operated by friends of ours as an inn called Villa Trapp). The operators of Villa Trapp have opened, in the old town of Salzburg, a good intro to the real family, as well as the movie, in their exhibit called Sound of Music World. I do not believe that Felsenreitschule, the concert venue in the film, is part of most tours either. The tours also do not include Hohensalzburg Fortress, the imposing castle that sits above the old town, a must see, and a nice uphill walk from some of the movie sites. You might spend 4 hours on a tour and another 4 hours or so own your own. There is also a great hike over the mountain from the castle that ends at one of the best beer halls (part of a monastery) in Austria. One of our favorite small cities in Europe, and we will be back for our third visit to Villa Trapp next month.

Be sure you have looked at the integrated itinerary before proceeding.
Here are some of the SOM tours I found by simple search:
0900 + 4 hours = 1300
0900 + 6 hours = 1500
0915 + 4 hours = 1315
0915 + 5 hours = 1514
1130 + 6 hours = 1730
1400 + 4 hours = 1800
1400 + 5 hours = 1900
The tour probably starts at the Mirabell Square, about 15 minutes walk from the Salzburg train station. How early then you need to leave Munich to catch the 9:15am SOM tour? You probably need to take the 6:55-8:42 Meridian 79007 train (www.bahn.com)
There is a catch if you want to use a Bayern Pass. https://www.bahn.com/en/view/offers/...-tickets.shtml.
You cannot use it before 9am and you cannot use it on fast trains, like Railjet. So the earlier train you can catch using the Bayern Pass is 9:55-11:42 Meridian 79013. This means only the 14:00 tours are possible using this discount pass.

Yes and often those Meridian trains can cost very little - check on www.bahn.de/en and compare but good point by greg, as usual. And, coming back 2 discounted Meridian fares could be about the same as the pass. Only if using Pass each way would it save a substantial amount of money.
