Day Trip out of Rome
My husband and I will be traveling to Italy on an escorted tour and we have one free day while our tour is in Rome. We have previously been to Rome so we would like to venture out on our own (outside of Rome) for the day. Does anyone have any suggestions for a place we can get to fairly easily on our own? We will not have a car so we'll need to take a train or some other method.
Any suggestions would be appreciated.

Ostia Antica would be good for seeing some ancient Roman ruins without going all the way to Pompeii. A day in the Alban Hills is very relaxing, Frascati and Castel Gondolfo. Assisi for the amazing art and walking in the footsteps of St. Francis and St. Clare. Your tour is probably going to Florence, but if not, I've done several daytrips there from Rome. If interested in WWII, you could visit the museum at Anzio and the American cemetary at Nettuno. All these destinations can be reached by train from Rome.

Unfortunately Pompei is on the escorted tour. We will have visited prior to our arrival in Rome.
A friend at work mentioned Todi. I have never heard of it although we've been to Umbria & Tuscany. What are your thoughts, is it worth a day trip? Are there better choices?
