Day Trip from Rome suggestions?
Requesting suggestions for comparatively short and interesting day trip from Rome this January. Last winter in Vienna we took one-hour tram ride to small town of Baden and did the mineral baths at Grand Hotel Sauerhof. It was great! Saw the casino, walked around town, met nice locals, had delicious lunch, shopped and then returned to Vienna. Looking for something as interesting out of Rome. Also need info on booking Opera or Symphony tickets, please.

Since you are looking for a "comparatively short" daytrip, similar to your one hour trip to Baden, I would suggest the towns of the Castelli Romani like Frascati, Castel Gandolfo and Nemi. Ostia Antica is also a good choice as is Orvieto. All of these places can be reached in an hour or less by train.

Naples is only 90 minutes or so on the Eurostar; Monte Cassino is only an hour. I have done the Pompeii thing in a day 3 or 4 times, it is not that bad a trip. Also, my suggestion is to continue on the Circumvesuviana train to Sorrento and have an early lunch, look around then come back and visit Pompeii. You can catch the 8pm Eurostar back to Rome. Grab a couple of beers on the club car while holding a post mortem on the trip.
