Suggested day trip outside of Rome?

Does anyone have any suggestions for a day trip around Rome for Sunday? if not Sunday what's the best day for a day trip?

Tivoli, Orvieto, Ostia Antica....?

Is it possible to do this in the morning then do something else? or is it better to do this in the afternoon?

I'd go to Ostia Antica or Tivoli. Both are great and easy to get to. You should go to Ostia especially if you didn't have time to go to Pompeii while you were in Rome.

Ostia Antica can be done in half a day; Orvieto needs a full day. For Villa d'Este/Tivoli, it depends on connections, but it's better to count a day.

Every Roman and his uncle day-trips on Sunday; do your day trip on Monday if you prefer fewer crowds.

cali - if you click on my screen name, you'll find my trip report from our last visit to Rome - we did a day trip to Orvieto which I describe in some [people might say too much] detail. we loved it and would heartily recommend it.

however, in late may, I think I would prefer Tivoli - the gardens of the villa d'Este should be lovely and you can have a great lunch afterwards in the town. just check that it'll be open on the day you go!
