Day trip from Bodensee/Bregenz

We are going to be staying somewhere on the German side of the Bodensee, and would like to take a day trip from Bregenz - probably the Bregenzerwald. Any suggestions as to route/villages/short walks? Thanks Adee

Hi, Does this mean you're interested in an Austrian route? There are lots of lovely places from Lindau up to Uberlingen in Germany. And I understand that Oberstaufen is beautiful, but I've never been there. J.

Well, the reason for our trip is to go on the Zeppelin NT out of Friedrichshafen - so we are either staying in Meersburg or Lindau. We have three days in the area: a "Zeppelin" day, a day checking out other towns on the Bodensee by ferry, and a driving day. We wanted to see Bregenz, and that led me to reading about the Bregenzerwald (spelling?) - which sounded both scenic and accessbile for a day trip. We would like to drive some, walk some, drive some, etc. Orignally we thought of going to Liechtenstein (I KNOW I butchered that!, but I haven't read anything very positive about that unless you are into stamps. I just returned the German guidebooks to the library - I guess I'll retrieve them tomorrow to look up Uberlingen and Oberstaufen. Adee

Depending on the time of year, a visit to the gardens on the island of Mainau is a beautiful experience. It's opposite Lindau. You also might want to continue on to the falls of the Rhine at Schaffhausen -- spectacular.

Hi again. I wish I could say more about the Bregenzerwald (have you tried to search for the town or area at this forum?). Both Meersburg and Lindau are terrific, but if you like small, then Meersburg it is -- or consider tiny Wasserburg. Other places in the area that show up in my Phaidon Cultural Guide are Birnau, Wangen, Ravensburg, and Isny. (listed because of artistic or architectural significance) I know there are some pretty villages, but I just cannot recall their names.

If I were planning your visit, I'd do an image search maybe at Altavista or Google with the towns or the areas (Bregenzerwal, or Allgau, for example.) Good luck. J.

If you want to experienced the Austrian Alps you can head up to Lech, Zurs, St Anton via rt 200 (scenic) or the autobahn thru the Albergpass

A lovely way to spen the day!

I know I am well-known on this forum as a Switzerland fan ... if you want to see terrific mountain scenery and tiny villages make a day trip to Appenzell and Mt. Säntis in Switzerland. Bregenzerwald is not as spectacular and Bregenz itself nice but not as much as the towns mentioned before (Lindau, Schaffhausen).

Hi, Ingo, you've come up for air? (Do you know that expression?) Good to 'read your voice."

Lech/Zurs/St. Anton and Appenzell/Mt. Santis both sound and look (tourist bureau websites) wonderful! Any idea how much we would be able to cover in one day if we leave from Friedrichshafen or Lindau? We like small roads, so we can stop and take pictures/walks/etc.

You can easily cover the Voralberg area in one day! You can loop around Dornbirn by taking the the Autobahn toward Innsbruck (Rt. 316 I think?)
Look for Rt. 198 near the Arlberg Tunnel. Spend time in St. Anton and then head up Rt. 198 to St. Christoff, Zurs and then spend some time in the lovely valley of Lech. You can then catch Rt 200 back doen toward Dornbirn and finally back on the Autobahn to Lindau. By the way, althouh Dornbirn is a large town, there is a lovely hike in the area called the "Rappenloch" near Bodele. It is a small gorge that is easy to walk!

Hi Ingo- I looked into all your Tirol suggestions- thanks so much. I'm hanging onto them for future reference. My daughter was really keen on going to Bodensee so we'll be spending 3 nights in Lindau. I'm glad to get your endorsement of Appenzell and Mt Santis- an area we've never been to.

I found an earlier forum posting entitled Appenzell vs Bernese Oberland and had to smile at all the pro B.O. comments. Places like Wengen would be fantastic if somehow 95% of the tourists could be removed.

We still have some unplanned nights after Lindau so if the weather to the N is poor we may be heading south on our return to Vienna.

I've also been looking longingly at Hotel Waldhaus and dreaming of the view of the Silsersee- too bad the view room rates are sky high.
Thanks again for your invaluable help!!
