Customs in Lisbon
Hello, flying thru Amsterdam from USA to Lisbon end of Sept. Not a big problem, but hotel shuttle can't pick us up for about 2 hours from when we land in Lisbon. Given time to get thru customs and stop at AMT, should we sit and wait or find alternative transportation? If alternative, what do you recommend. Many thanks, travelers. Glastonbury

Answer is simple. Both the Netherlands and Portugal are members of the Schengen agreement. You will clear immigration and passport controls and have your passport stamped in Amsterday before connecting to Lisbon. You will have to go through airport security in Amsterday. Upon arrival in Lisbon, there will be no immigration, no passport control (unless something is going on but usually there isn't) so you will go to baggage reclaim, assuming your baggage was checked through and customs will probably consist of going through the green channel (nothing to declare unless you're bringing in too much booze or too many cigarettes and the like). You should be out of there in no time flat.
If you're going home the same way (and I'm assuming home is in the USA), no government immigration check in Lisbon although I'm sure your passport will be checked at least when checking in and at security at the airport. In Amsterdam you will have to go through Schengen exit formalities where your passport will be stamped out of Schengen, probably have your passport checked agsin as flights to the USA out of Amsterdam get special attention and be on your way.

Absolutely passport will be stamped in Amsterdam (this is a connecting flight). This is the first stop in Schengen region. Amsterdam to Lisbon is an intra Schengen flight; there are technically no formal border controls. OTOH as a contrast, if the OP were flying to Lisbon via London-Heathrow, he or she would remain an international transit passenger, not enter the UK nor undergo any UK border controls, will have a security check within Heathrow and then the flight from London to Lisbon will be the first entrance into Schengen and will have passport control to enter Schengen region and have passport stamped. The UK has chosen to stay out of Schengen immigration agreement.

Flight from Amsterdam to Lisbon is domestic (both members of Schengen) so Americans must go through Immigration in Amsterdam. So I would find your own way to the hotel rathe than waste 2 hours siting in the airport in Lisbon.
The only place you can transit without entering in the UK, since it is not a member of Schengen and from the UK to Lisbon would still be an international flight.

Assuming you arrive at AMS at the crack of dawn to be in Lisbon by 9, you will be zombies. Lisbon has a nice modern airport, but hanging out for two hours . . . .
The airport is not particularly far from the center of the city, if that is where your hotel is located.
Ask what % of your total trip cost a taxi will be.

Have you decided if you want to pay for the additional day so you can get into your room on arrival? If not, make sure the hotel concierge can hold on to your bags while you got stretch your legs and feed your tummies, then check i when the room is ready.
To arrive in Lisbon you'll leave AMS at 07:00, the flight is three hours, Lisbon is an hour behind Amsterdam.
