Copenhagen Hotels: Tivoli or Nyhavn?

Looking for a good hotel in the $150 - 180 range (if deals are available) with excellent breakfast included.

We know we'll be spending time with our 7-year old in Tivoli, but also strolling the harbor area. Where should we stay? How easy are the walks between the two, and is it safe to walk all over at night?

Thanks very much for your advice.

I like the Mermaid Hotel in Copenhagen, and it has a great breakfast included, and it is perfectly located, and I think you could get a deal in your price range. The drawbacks you can read about on TripAdvisor (and they would be huge drawbacks to many). They do have triple rooms available.

If you get a hotel near Tivoli be sure it is NOT near the train station. that area is extremely tacky with many tasateless shops and not something to which you would want to expose a child.

Stay away from the area south of the train station (Istegade) and you will be fine. I agree that's a yucky area.

We stayed in Nyhavn (71 Nyvahn, I believe) and liked the area very much. Lots of restaurants and just the interesting comings and goings of boats. We took a great harbor cruise that left from quite close to our hotel. I know we walked to Tivoli and it was an easy walk. I would think a 7-year old would find Nyvahn an interesting area to be in and you can still spend as much time as you want at Tivoli.

As far as walking at night, when are you going? We were there in June and there isn't much darkness at that time of year!!! Sort of gives "night" a whole new meaning!!

Thank you for the suggestions. We are going at the end of May, and the area you've suggested - 71 Nyhavn - is really where I'd like to be. Yes, our daughter will love the harbor area - we will, too!

I requested quotes from both there and the Copenhagen Strand (I believe they're from the same hotel group) and the quote I received for the double room was OK - $155 with breakfast - but we also need two triples for our big family group, and they were very expensive.

Will we do better anywhere else with similar atmosphere, or is it a foregone conclusion? What about The Square? Thanks again for the help.

The Square has a great location also and I think it's had positive reviews here.

South of the train station is not great, but we stayed at the Radisson SAS right across the street from the train station and the Tivoli, and it was not only a wonderful location, but a great hotel. It won't work for you because they only allow 2 in a room there (we booked 2 adjoining rooms and had the whole side of the hotel, with a view of Tivoli and our son had his own huge room!). Nyhavn is a GREAT area.

It's an easy walk from one area to the other; Stroget connects the two.

It is safe walking the town at night, and like the others said, in summer, it hardly gets dark.

You might also want to go to Bakken if your 7 year old enjoys amusement parks. This is one not frequented too much by tourists, but is in the middle of a deer park and a lovely walk from the train station (commuter train from the center of Copenhagen is about 15 minutes).

Have a great trip!
