Continental service-Newark to Ireland

Has anybody flown in the last year or so the Newark-Dublin flight? Also, what about Shannon to Newark? This will be my route this summer and I'm wondering about entertainment and service on the flight. I can't tell from CO's website whether they have personal videos in the seatbacks. I get the bad suspicion that they don't.

Your in coach?

Expect monitors that drop down from the ceiling in different parts of the cabin. They probably use a 757 aircraft, which is 3x3 seating. Wine, beer and alcohol is $5 in coach. Earphones should be free. If it is a night flight, dinner going over and a snack before you arrive. And Continental usually will keep the fasten seat belt sign on for the entire flight, so if you need to go, just make sure the landing gear isn't down.

On the EWR-DUB leg, the earlier departure uses 767 while the later one uses that godawful single aisle 757 - try for the earlier if at all possible. On the SNN-EWR route I think you are stuck with the 757. At least it is only a 6.5 hour flight.

I flew continental this past august Dublin to newark round trip. We stopped in Shannon on the way over. I think the screens popped down from above so its not ideal viewing and to be hoinest I was going insane on the flight back as I felt squashed but I fly them to keep up my points I use Air France and KLM to travel for work and they go on my continental points. Its fine and only a few hours.

Seamus is absolutely correct. Get the earlier 767 flight. CO's 767 is one of the more comfortable planes in coach to fly across the Atlantic, while their 757 is probably THE worst.

Nice thing about leaving from Shannon is that you go through immigration at Shannon Airport, and just skip it at Newark. You only have to pick up bags and walk through customs, a ten second event.

When we flew back from Shannon -Newark on Wednesday, they announced earphone were about to be charged $5 for. The plane was 1/3 full and everyone got three seats each. We departed 9 a.m. and lunch was served immediately, snack just an hour before landing. Very pleasant crew, but everyone's correct about the drop down screens throughout cabin.

Continental will be retrofitting their 757-200 with AVOD and 110V power in coach. [BusinessFirst already have them.] But I don't think it'll start until fall and won't complete for many months.

I will be on the earlier flight to Dublin, in the 767. Doesn't sound like fun for the way back from Shannon. Charging $5 for headphones on a transatlantic flight? That's shocking! I've always been on flights with free headphones for the transatlantic flight. I so wish I were on BA's 777 through London, but the price was not right.

Headphones are free on trans-Atlantic flight, $1 on domestic. If your experience is different, get the name of the the FA, and write to CO or call their customer care line to complain.

Anyways, I always bring my own headphone and an adapter (Radioshack has one for about $5.99).

Just thought I'd post a followup. I flew from Newark to Dublin May 30 and Shannon to Newark June 7. The flight going to Dublin on the 767 had individual entertainment screens, whereas the Shannon flight did not. While both flights were cramped in economy class, the service was good.

Thanks for the helpful info, I'll be on the same flight over in late August. It's nice to know what to expect!
