Construction in Vienna?
Is there anyone out there who is in Vienna now or has just returned from Vienna in September that can give an update on the construction going on in the old town area?
Esp. near St. Stephens and on Karntnerstrasse near Neuer Market?
I'm looking at some pensions there for a visit, but I don't to be stuck near construction on my vacation.
.....Not that I'm going to be sitting in my hotel all day listening to the noise, but still - who wants to be up at 6am while they're on vacation (not me!).
Thank you!

Hi arindasue:
I found out about it when I wrote to Pensio Aviano - they told me that in the 2009/2010 extensive construction works take place along Graben, Kärntnerstrasse and St. Stephans' square, and that disturbances due to construction noise are possible in tnear proximity. According to them, there should be no work on weekends and holidays. Pension Pertschy said there was work going on near them as well, but that it should be complete by November.
I read on tripadvisor that the construction started at 6am in some spots. Another person said most of the work is done in the area of Graben except for lighting and benches.
If anyone else out there just got back, would love to hear about how the noise was in the area! Thx

I just googled "vienna construction st stephens" and there is a pdf that explains the whole process.

I'm going to take a closer look at it right now.

Construction at St Stephans Cathedral - Stephansdom has been on going for years. This includes replacement of old soft stone used in construction. This is not noisy but looks bad This has nothing to do with the renovation of the walking surface of Graben and Karntnerstrsase. Before the surface was replaced extensive replacement of various gas pipes, water lines , electric etc. was doe . Hopefulla this will allow the new surfaxe to remain undisturbed for many years.
Much of this work is now complete in some areas.
Currently some work continues near to the corner of Graben and Kohlmarkt- that area near to the Julius Meinl store. Some work near to the square in front of Stephansdom.
The city has stated that work should be done by November.
The Pertschy was never affected by this work being on another street , perhaps a 100 meters or more away.
Pension Nossek was much affected. Most work near to the Nossek is now done and it is not bad by them.
The Pension Aviano is another matter.
This is a completely differenent construction site to that surface described above.
Very near to the Aviano on Karntnerstrasse, numerous buildings are in the process of demolition. I was by there about 1 wweek ago and could not even talk with a companion walking next to me or answer my Handy ( cellphone).Air was filled with dust and just chaos with trucks eqipment etc.
The demolition of buidings will lead to construction of a large department store Peek and Cloppenberg and also their company offices.
This work will take more than 1 year at least.
The square in front of the Aviano, Neuer Markt is fenced off with much construction eqipment, construction buildings, material. I assume this to be used as an area for this new construction.
Someone told me that this pension is giving ear plugs to their guests.
No idea if this is correct but I would avoid ataying near to this immediate area( the Aviano ) for some time in the future.
The hotel Ambassador is nearby too.

Yikes! We're at the Ambassador Oct 6-10, non-refundable reservations. Oh well. I think I'll contact them directly to see if we can at least get a room away from the noise.
I'm really more concerned about the general ambiance for my first trip to Vienna, but, again, oh well.
Magellan...just try googling it yourself.

We just got back and Molker has it nailed. There is construction all over the center on the main pedestrian shopping streets. If you're locked into a hotel directly on one of them I would certainly insist on a quiet room at the back. We were fortunate. Our room at the Hotel von Ungarn, just steps from the Stephansdom, looked out on quiet Domgasse. I hope to post a Trip Report today.

We recently stayed on Graben for 5 nights. The loud noise was not all day but did start every day, including Saturday, at 6:10a.m. for a few minutes. It was like they were clocking in. We were more concerned about lack of noise at night so it did not bother us much.
