My french cousin has some, she is elderly and they are GARDEN SHOES and sit outside the balcony door for the garden. They are not Crocs brand, just the same plastic or whatever style of clog. She would never wear them even to get bread at the corner.

As for tourists and being taken as one or not, I live in a very touristy city. Loads of Americans, and they do not dress much different then us, they look the same( ok, some of the big hair and too much makeup is stand out ) but I never am mistaken for one when I am wandering in the areas they frequent.
Tourists look like tourists because they are TOURING, they actually LOOK at the sites, I march past them on my way to somewhere else, I do not stop to look at buildings, the ocean, the maps or the street musicans and performers. I am going to work, I am going home, I am not TOURING,, and that is why I think it is difficult to not look like a tourist to a local no matter what you wear.

( and yes there are as I said the freakish exceptions, the huge fake nails and t shirts with rhinestones are very Amrican and they stand out even if they tried to look like they were rushing about like a local)

If you travel with your spouse, please, don't wear matching outfits. That's plain weird!
