I am taking my girlfreind to Italy, it is her first time going to Europe at all. I am looking for a nice/clean rather inexpensive hotel in Venice, as we do not have a ton of money. We are getting there March 14th and plan on staying for a couple nights before jumping on a train to the next destination, where ever that might be. Thanks for any info!

What is cheap ? 100 euros a night is possible but it's not easy to find..Venice lodging is very very expensive.

I really have no clue, which is why I am testing the waters of different hotel ideas. If 100 euro is the cheapest, then that's what I have to work with. I have no idea on which hotels will be nice, which areas I would not want to stay in....etc

OK, I understand No, 100 euros is not the cheapest but below that it's quite dificult to find hotels. Maybe you would like hostels or religious institutions ? They are usually cheaper.
The rule of thumb for location is...as far as it is from Piazza San Marco, it is cheaper.
Hope some Venezia experts come round here

that is good info so far I have no problem spending 100 euro, just want to make sure I get maybe a few ideas from people of places that they would go back to. I've stayed in places in france that look great online, then are not when you get there. Being this is her first time, and in Venice, I want it to be special. Thanks again!

Go to the B&B section and take a look. It is in a nice quiet Dorsoduro location, w/in easy walking distance to some lively squares & other sites. It was clean, had a great private bathroom, decent breakfast & a triple cost 120 euros last year (our friend, a couple, stayed there a week before us for 110 euros/double). It is the least expensive place I have stayed in Venice, and I would definitely stay there again.

If you have to splurge one place on your trip, Venice is worth it. It is better, in my opinion, to pay more to stay in Venice itself than across the water in Mestre, where the hostel/camping is. You want the late night/early morning hours to wander around & soak up the amazing atmosphere of Venice.

If you are going in March, before the busier season, and willing to spend a little time to search for rooms in Venice that won't break your budget, I am sure you can find something.

Another hotel that is recommended on this site, and which we also considered, is al Campaniel. The owner was more than helpful.

Stayed at Al Campaniel May 2005. I'd definitely stay with them again.

We stayed at the Albergo Marin and were very satisfied. One of better inexpensive places we stayed. We had a room with the toilet just outside the door, but shower and sink in the room. That worked out fine for us (my mother and I). It is under 100 euros a night and perhaps discounted during off season. It is in Santa Croce, walking distance from the train station.
