Cinque Terre or a Tuscan hill town for 1 day/night?

We just got back from our first Italy trip. We did 4 nights in Rome, 3 in Venice, 2 in Florence and a week in Tuscany, which was our favorite. I was really interested in seeing Cinque Terre, but decided it was too far for one day. If you don't want to hassle with a car, how about taking the train from Florence to Siena for a couple of nights? It is a 1 hr. 40 min. trip, and the scenery from the train gives you a nice sense of the countryside. The train station is in the center of Florence's historical district, and very easy to negotiate. Siena is considered large for a hill town, but beautiful and charming. We wish we had been able to spend more time there.

One more idea...You could also take the train from Florence to Cortona (just over an hour). You would need to take a bus or a taxi up the hill to Cortona, as the train station is in Carmucia at the bottom of the hill, but quite close. We spent a week in Cortona as our "home base" for Tuscany and loved it.

What about going to Pisa or Lucca for the night. Lucca has a lovely feel and it is great fun riding the walls on hired bikes. I am not sure about the trains though. If you go to Pisa remember you have to book the tour before you can go, can be done on the day so go as soon as you arrive and then wander around to fill in the time.

The Tuscany countryside is stunning in late May & early June. Unfortunatly, it's best seen by car. I'm assuming that you will be visiting another big town in Italy (Rome or Venice) plus Florence, so a trip to the Cinque Terra would complement your itinerary quite nicley for 1 day. You can take the train there, so that would suit your "no car" situation better than Tuscany. IMHO Siena, Pisa, & Lucca are nice, but they are big towns and you could get "too much" of a big town experience if you visit these.
This comment does not answer your question, but if you are going to be in Italy for only 6 full days without a car, I would bag Cinque Terra and add that day to one of your other stays. I'm assuming you are not trying to fit in Florence and two other big cities into 6 days.
