here's another possibility: Continental to EWR where there is a sale on for flights to Cologne; Cologne to Rome on GermanWings

KEEP IN MIND, that you are going at the peak of summer tourist travel --- both ways -- and $1200 fare is about right for that time of year. You might get down to a 1000 but don't count on much less.

I have heard from many agents that this year is unprecedentetd, in re: fares going UP this time of year (for flights in spring/summer) as opposed to down.
I usually book 3 to 6 months out... and find the closer to 3 months I get, the lower the fares are getting.. this year, they've jsut gone up up and up! And UP! (flying SFO-ATH in May, ret. June) - I just stopped the gamble, and booked a flight last week. More than I want to spend, but indeed, the very next day the same flight (on BA) was over $400 MORE than what I had booked the night before.
FYI, anyone traveling to Athens in mid May (specifically around 20-24, which is when we are flying -) there is a big world cup football (OK, soccer ;-) championship happening in Athens then - hotels will go UP in price as will airfare to ATH... so my advice is book now.

Hi FL,
That should have been www.mobissimo.com
I wouldn't buy a $1200 ticket now.
I think that if you watch fares through the end of Feb you have a 50/50 chance of saving 300 or losing 100.
